Hey, I’m Emily! I have a bachelor's degree in Biology and a master’s degree in Zoo, Aquarium, and Animal Shelter Management, both from Colorado State University.
I have a passion for the animals and natural world, and I love sharing that passion with others. My most recent job was as a full-time caretaker for seven bonobos (which are basically small chimpanzees)!
I was a Teaching Assistant during my time in graduate school and I taught several biology laboratory courses. I also tutored for the lecture portion of LIFE 102--Attributes of Living Systems. One of my favorite parts of teaching these laboratory sections was holding office hours where I was able to work one-on-one with students who wanted extra help.

Science doesn’t come easily to everyone, and it certainly didn’t come easy to me. As an undergraduate student, I always felt like learning biology was easier for everyone else than it was for me because I’m terrible at memorizing things—which is required when you have to draw the entire carbon cycle on an exam or write out the equation for photosynthesis. What I found over time, though, was that I could remember things—like the carbon cycle—if I understood them completely. So I shifted my focus from simply memorizing meaningless biology terms in order to pass the test to really understanding the whole mechanism of each concept I was studying. This technique helped me excel as a student and, according to the students I taught while I was in grad school, be a great teaching assistant who explains things in a graspable way.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read about me. I’m excited for the opportunity to help students excel in science. If you're looking for help in ecology, environmental science, evolution, population genetics, biology, zoology, or animal behavior, please reach out!

I have a bachelors degree in biology and mastered my courses in basic biology, ecology, environmental sciences, evolution, primatology, and more. When I was in graduate school I taught the laboratory portions of Biology 102–Attributes of Living Systems, and Biology 103–Organismal Biology. I wrote and graded all exams, quizzes, and practicals, and tutored for the lecture portions of the course. I really enjoy working with students and making biology interesting and relatable.

Zoology,

Zoology

As an undergraduate biology student at Colorado State Univeristy, I was able to take, and master, many zoology courses such as Invertebrate Zoology, Genetics, Biology and Behavior of Dogs, Livestock Welfare, and Domestic Animal Anatomy & Physiology. I went on to get my master’s degree in Zoo, Aquarium, and Animal Shelter Management—also from CSU—where I conducted my masters thesis on the importance of cognitive enrichment for zoo-housed primates. I took graduate level courses in primatology, animal behavior and welfare, animal ethics, animal nutrition, and more. After graduate school I was a caretaker for bonobo chimpanzees, and was responsible for their behavioral welfare as well as their physical welfare. I am now more broadly focused on animal behavior and welfare, and develop puzzles and toys to engage the brains and the bodies of captive animals.

Stunning Ecology Tutor

Wouldn’t recommend anyone else. Evidently has a lot of experience explaining in a way that makes sense. Additionally, she is a subject expert! Worked on building phylogenetic trees and she was very helpful.

Makes bio easy to understand

she's great! I felt way more confident to take my exam after a session with her. She simplifies subjects that would otherwise take longer for me to comprehend.

Tutor responded:

I'm really happy that I could help you study, Kimberly! I appreciate the great review, and I'm looking forward to seeing you again.

Great tutor

Emily was very patient helping me through my biology class ! She gave me simple adjustments to correct my thinking and made the information so much clearer for me! I will continue working with Emily .

Tutor responded:

Thanks so much, Daniela!! I really appreciate the feedback and I'm really glad that our time together helps your understanding. Looking forward to next time!

Very informative and clear!

Emily helped me break down six chapters of information and explained it in a way I could remember and retain for my lab practical. She even checked in after my exam to make sure I did well! Biology isn’t my strong suit but with Emily’s help, I’m confident I will do well.

Jasmine, 4 lessons with Emily
Tutor responded:

Thanks so much, Jasmine! I’m so happy I could help you go into your lab practical with confidence. I’m looking forward to studying with you again soon.
