I hold a degree in the teaching of English at the secondary level from the University of Illinois at Chicago, having graduated with High Departmental Distinction. I am currently licensed in the State of Illinois to teach English Language Arts for grades 6-12. I hold a middle school endorsement in English and social studies. In addition to my teaching credentials, I have worked with students in the Oak Park River Forest High School Tutoring Center and the Writing Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

As an educator and tutor, I modify and differentiate my lessons based upon each individual student's needs, learning styles, and goals. My goal is for each student to be actively involved in his or her own learning; not merely to pass the next exam, but to master the material in order to apply the knowledge going forward. I partner with my students to encourage their growth and learning, often utilizing the Socratic method in order to challenge my students, to engender critical thinking, and to increase confidence while mastering challenging concepts.

I would not have graduated from college without the aid of a wonderful tutor, who serves as my personal model. As a former student and tutee, I am fully aware that learning is difficult and concepts must be broken down into smaller chunks and reachable goals in order to be achieved. Learning is a process and is most successful when both the tutor and tutee work together as a team in order to achieve the learning goals. I will tutor you or your child in a mutually agreed upon library or other academic environment, such as a local college or university. I will arrive at each session prepared and ready to work, and expect my students to be prepared and ready to work as well.

I am a member of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and frequently use NCTE resources to improve my skill and to keep abreast of pertinent issues in English education. Finally, I will provide the results of my most recent State of Illinois background check, including fin

Public Speaking

As a teacher, I deliver live instruction to 125 students each school day. This can be in-person or online. I teach students how to speak publicly when we cover our speech unit in school. Finally, I volunteer as a Sunday school teacher, lector, and assisting minister at church. Each of these volunteer positions requires the ability to speak in front of 10-200 people at a time.

Literature

My degree in the teaching of English from UIC has provided me with a solid foundation to help students gain a firm understanding of their literature assignments, from ancient Greek tragedies to William Shakespeare, J. D. Salinger, and beyond. Most recently I taught "Julius Caesar," "Macbeth," and "The Catcher in the Rye" to high school sophomores. My tutoring methods are dependent upon and tailored to the student's learning style, goals, and the individual piece of literature being studied.
