Hi! I'm a retired teacher who really misses teaching. I have many years of experience teaching in the elementary and middle school. I worked most of my teaching life in Chicago's inner-city schools and I have accumulated many books and materials over all those years - not to mention realizing that each student learns differently. I have always tried to make learning fun and interesting for my classes and whenever I tutored. Having learned Spanish as a Second Language, I can say, "I've been there, done that" and I am quite aware of the difficulties that students have today whether learning Spanish or ESL. I have worked with elementary and high school students and taught for a year as an adjunct college professor teaching English to adults - mostly Spanish-speaking, but from other language and cultural backgrounds as well. I have loved teaching since I can remember and I wouldn't be looking for a job as a tutor if I didn't feel I would be a good fit for those who are seeking my services. I am still an IL state-certified teacher and school administrator, and my heart is in helping students be the best they can be with my help.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am an Illinois up-to-date state-certified teacher in all subjects for grades K-6th. I was an elementary school teacher of all subjects during my 12 years in the classrooms of the Chicago Public Schools. All subjects includes Reading, Writing, Language Arts / Literacy, Math, Science, Social Studies, ESL, and Spanish.
I have an actual Master's degree is Linguistics: ESL and have taught ESL at all levels to speakers of a variety of languages over the years. I learned Spanish as a second language myself as a young adult, so I as familiar with the frustrations and needs of someone learning ESL. I have taught ESL as a class in multi-age and multi-ability level classes in public school settings, and also taught two classes at Triton College - one in truly basic English and one to a wife-variety of learners from different backgrounds who wanted more practice with speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing, comprehending, etc. I LOVED that job the most. It was a lot of work preparing for it, but I felt so appreciated sharing my talents.
As an elementary school teacher for much of my career, I always had to teach reading. I believe my love of doing it helped make me successful at it, whether part of a general ed program or English or Spanish reading and grammar in a bilingual ed program. I taught both of my daughters to read long before they entered kindergarten and even though my grandson is somewhat developmentally delayed,he's really picking up reading at age 5. My last year of teaching, I taught kindergarten for a while and we FLEW through pre-reading and into beginning reading skills. If I were to return for another Master's, I believe it would be in Reading.
Hola! I learned Spanish as a Second Language so I am very familiar with the process and the most difficult aspects of the language - let's say "I've been there, done that!" I am a state-certified teacher in both Spanish and ESL and try to make learning a language interesting and fun and worth all of your hard-earned money. I have a fairly flexible schedule in the afternoons, evenings, and weekends. I've worked with children and adults and try to tailor my lessons to your specific needs and desires. You can always ask me any questions!
