About Alisha

I graduated summa cum laude, with a BA in Counseling Psychology, from an undergraduate program that required massive self-direction, which solidified skills crucial to effective tutoring. With graduate level success in counseling and psychology I have become an expert in interpersonal communication, motivation, and learning. My official experience is teaching creative writing to high school students, as well as being an elementary school teacher's aide. In addition, I conducted a great deal of neurology research during undergraduate school which included studying how synapses of the human brain develop, process stimuli, retain knowledge, and the end product learning. Utilizing this insight, I have taught children of average intellect skills considered beyond their capability. For example, I have successfully taught three year olds to add and subtract. In general, any inhibition in learning is a failure of the instructor to effectively reach the student, as opposed to a failure of the student to grasp the concepts being taught. Let’s put my training and experience to use to benefit you or your child.

I specialize in tutoring Writing, English, Psychology, and Public Speaking from elementary school through undergraduate level studies. I am also able to tutor in any elementary level subject. I have experience working with children aged three through young adults. I have a keen ability to assess student needs, strengths, weaknesses, and learning style to best serve the individual. Flexibility in tutoring style allows me to tailor lessons to each student in order to provide the greatest growth and learning. Due to this, I am uniquely well suited to assist students who may have had trouble finding success through tutoring in the past. Periodic assessment and evaluative feedback are critical to my personal approach to tutoring, and will allow students/parents to track progress.

Tutoring will take place in my home, yours, or the local library depending on your preference. Let’s work together to increase your confidence and improve your academic performance! I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Theatre

My educational background and experience in theater has prepared me to tutor in this area. I began auditioning and landing roles in school plays in middle school; success continued into high school, including a lead in a high school production. In high school I also took acting courses, was on the speech team, and in the drama club. In undergraduate school I excelled in courses in acting, theater production, and play writing. During and after college I auditioned and was cast in numerous community theater roles, including lead roles in three different plays.
