About Rachael

My love for teaching comes from my lifelong love of learning. I know that hard work and dedication to learning pays off. I have been in education for 12 years and have had the pleasure to work with hundreds of students. I have helped those students realize their own potential as well as to see their grades and self-esteem improve. I believe that all students can learn, they just learn in different ways and differently every day.

My degree from Grand Canyon University is in Elementary Education and Special Education. I currently work full-time with students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders. In the past, I have worked with a range from Autism to Physical Disabilities and many things in between. I am looking to help students that are struggling in school achieve success.

I think out side of the box, and look for ways to make learning fun and engaging for the student while keeping the student challenged, but not overwhelmed. I will assist the student in finding the answers and finding ways to remember the information, without enabling the student.

I have been working with special education students for 12 years. I have worked with many different students with many different diagnosis. I believe that every student can learn, when the material is presented in a way that is beneficial to that student. (visual, auditory, and kinetics). The student must be engaged but not overwhelmed when learning new material.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I raised two boys with ADHD and have taught many students with ADD/ADHD. My educational background is in Special Education and I current teach students with Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities. Students with ADD/ADHD require movement breaks and hands on learning activities to remain engaged in the learning. In addition, to frequent breaks and lots of encouragement.

Aspergers

I have experience with PECS, Positive Behavioral Supports, non-verbal reinforcements, Verbal behavior (VB), Training and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children (TEACCH), Discrete Trail Teaching (DTT) and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).

Autism

My educational background is in Special Education and I current teach students with Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities. I have many years of experience working with children with ASD. I have experience with PECS, Positive Behavioral Supports, non-verbal reinforcements, Verbal behavior (VB), Training and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children (TEACCH), Discrete Trail Teaching (DTT) and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). In addition, some of the strategies that I use when working with children with ASD are: role playing to teach social skills, visual schedules, sensory breaks, first/then task strips, positive reinforcements, variety of stimuli and setting in lessons to assist in generalization of skills, allow "wait" time for responses, and maintaining realistic expectations and offer choices when possible as well as remaining consistent.

Elementary (K-6th)

My degree and educational background is in Elementary Education/Special Education. I have worked as a paraprofessional in Naperville for 11 years as well as teaching students with Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities for the past year. Students require to feel safe and comfortable in the learning environment in order to be successful while learning. I am very familiar with the elementary curriculum and am very patient with younger students.

Elementary Math

I am approved in Elementary Math Qualifications for tutoring.

Special Needs

My degree and educational background is in Special Education and I current teach students with Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities. I have been working with special education students for 12 years. Students need frequent breaks and lots of encouragement as well as consistence in routine. I like to use task strips, so the students visually see what is expected of them and when there is a break or the end of the activity. I will provide the sensory input the student requires to be successful in learning, so that they are able to focus and feel comfortable in the learning environment. I understand that many students with special needs require adaptive equipment and I am willing to learn how to use the equipment if it is something I am unfamiliar with.

Study Skills

My educational background is in Special Education and I current teach students with Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities. I am a very organized person and believe that by teaching students organizational skills, it allows them to be better prepared to learn. In addition, teaching skills such as predicting, summarizing, looking back, note taking and review skills allows the student to be successful academically.
