Currently I teach college age students critical thinking skills one night per week. I am a graduate of Eastern Illinois University and Roosevelt University with a Bachelors degree in Special and Elementary Education and a Masters degree in Teacher leadership.

I am willing to tutor one-on-one or a small group of students because I feel that many students who struggle in school are lacking the personalized attention needed to help them be more successful. As a former teacher, I have many tricks for helping students learn and teaching them how to study.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a teacher certified in Elementary Education (Kindergarten through 8th grade.) I can help your student understand concepts taught in the elementary grades. I have worked in the public school system, co-teaching in a variety of classrooms and as a pull out instructor. I have co-taught Everyday Math and Connected Math and find that both require a great deal of problem solving to complete. As a parent, it is difficult to understand why the math homework is not the drill and practice you might have grown up with. Let me help you help your child become more successful.
Phonics,

Phonics

With 4 children of my own, I have learned that each child is unique. Yet, they all go through the same developmental processes. My 3rd child has difficulties with speech, which we are working out through the utilization of reading with phonics. Once he sees the letters are in the words, it helps him pronounce the words better. With my special education and elementary education degrees, let me help your child too.
Reading,

Reading

I taught the reading classes to students with special needs from 4th grade up from 1993 to 2010. I have a degree in special education and elementary education, this means if one way first doesn't prove successful, I work on finding another way.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

After teaching a college level class called Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, I realized that many of the skills we worked on involved time management and study skills. Working with special education students over the years, that was one of our major issues: how to study. So, the experience I have is very diverse from 1st grade through College students. We can work on developing a time management system to help with the studying that has to take place in your life. We can work on developing your study skills so that you can become a better student.

Algebra 1, after taking it in high school years ago, I have found that in my teaching career I have cotaught in many algebra 1 or prealgebra classrooms. This experience has enabled me with many different ways to approach the subject for different learners. It's my goal to find that leaning niche for each of my students.

I have been tutoring algebra 2 students for the past 3 years. I was a certified teacher who took some time off for parenting and had a hard time getting back into the school districts (after 18 years of teaching) so found other venues to utilize my teaching degree.

I have spent four (4) years teaching high school students. I specialized in students with learning difficulties in the regular education setting. In total I have 18 years of teaching experience in special education many times being pulled from rooms to work specifically with students who struggled in math. Since 2010 I've spent the majority of my tutoring sessions working with students and math in one shape or form. Personally math and science are my areas of strength and I enjoy finding ways to connect those subjects to students who were once adverse to them.

She is very knowledgeable about the grade level reading/writing

Really patient with my son. She took the time to assess where my son was with his reading ability. She had him read some passages and then write his own story. He really enjoyed it. That is probably the best part of the session. He liked doing it!!!

Christine is wonderful!

We just started using Christine as a tutor for chemistry and geometry. My daughter really likes her, so far so great!

Nancy, 2 lessons with Christine

Helped clarify

Christine was able to help clarify how to factor Algebra by grouping. it cleared up the mystery steps that were being skipped without understanding the step. My daughter with in that session got it and was able to do every homework problem. That confidence helps her to not get in the "weeds" and aids in quickness to solving the Algebra.

Great tutor. Playing games to instill a love of math!

Excellent! Christine is always prepared and brings games to make my daughter do math in her head. She's been coming for a couple of months and my 14 year old has improved two letter grades. I only wish we had started earlier.
