About Christine

I have worked in the public schools throughout Illinois for the past 18 years teaching kindergarten through high school age students. Currently I teach college age students critical thinking skills one night per week. I am a graduate of Eastern Illinois University and Roosevelt University with a Bachelors degree in Special and Elementary Education and a Masters degree in Teacher leadership.

I am willing to tutor one-on-one or a small group of students because I feel that many students who struggle in school are lacking the personalized attention needed to help them be more successful. As a former teacher, I have many tricks for helping students learn and teaching them how to study.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1, after taking it in high school years ago, I have found that in my teaching career I have cotaught in many algebra 1 or prealgebra classrooms. This experience has enabled me with many different ways to approach the subject for different learners. It's my goal to find that leaning niche for each of my students.

Algebra 2

I have been tutoring algebra 2 students for the past 3 years. I was a certified teacher who took some time off for parenting and had a hard time getting back into the school districts (after 18 years of teaching) so found other venues to utilize my teaching degree.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a teacher certified in Elementary Education (Kindergarten through 8th grade.) I can help your student understand concepts taught in the elementary grades. I have worked in the public school system, co-teaching in a variety of classrooms and as a pull out instructor. I have co-taught Everyday Math and Connected Math and find that both require a great deal of problem solving to complete. As a parent, it is difficult to understand why the math homework is not the drill and practice you might have grown up with. Let me help you help your child become more successful.

General Music

I have been playing the piano for over 18 years, and can instruct beginning piano students. I also have teacher qualifications to instruct general music classes.

Phonics

With 4 children of my own, I have learned that each child is unique. Yet, they all go through the same developmental processes. My 3rd child has difficulties with speech, which we are working out through the utilization of reading with phonics. Once he sees the letters are in the words, it helps him pronounce the words better. With my special education and elementary education degrees, let me help your child too.

Prealgebra

Algebra 1 & Prealgebra were two of the math classrooms I've cotaught in for 16 years. I also taught prealgebra skills to students with learning and behavior problems.

Proofreading

I grade college papers looking specifically for punctuation, spelling and grammar problems. I've taught in the public school system correcting the same issues from students with disabilities.

Reading

I taught the reading classes to students with special needs from 4th grade up from 1993 to 2010. I have a degree in special education and elementary education, this means if one way first doesn't prove successful, I work on finding another way.

Study Skills

After teaching a college level class called Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, I realized that many of the skills we worked on involved time management and study skills. Working with special education students over the years, that was one of our major issues: how to study. So, the experience I have is very diverse from 1st grade through College students. We can work on developing a time management system to help with the studying that has to take place in your life. We can work on developing your study skills so that you can become a better student.

Patient and very knowledgeable in chemistry.

Christine has helped with lab assignments, and learning how to balance equations. Christine is teaching me that chemistry is all around us. I enjoy my tutoring sessions with Christine, she teaches in a way that allows me to grasp what I might not understand.
