About Karl

Education:
* Northwestern University, BS engineering with co-op training at Oak Ridge National Laboratory
* University of South Carolina, PhD physics
* Livermore National Laboratory, physics postdoctoral fellowship
* University of Chicago, MD with honors, internship, residency in ophthalmology, 6 years on full time teaching faculty
Teaching:
* University of South Carolina; Physics for engineering students
* University of South Carolina: Astronomy while director of Melton Memorial Observatory
* University of Chicago Medical School: Ophthalmology for medical students and microsurgery for residents
* Joliet Junior College: college algebra

During the course of my career I have taught several courses at the college level and have helped students on a one to one basis on many occasions. I believe that my formal education is sufficient in both mathematics and physics to effectively tutor in either. Photography has been a long term interest of mine. I specialize in landscape photography and macro photography and have accumulated a growing library of over 300,000 images. I can explain both the optics and mechanics of cameras and have skills at post processing to optimize images before printing.

I have been able to successfully teach college algebra and have considerable experience using more advanced mathematical techniques as is required by modern physics.

I have taught college physics and have tutored students in physics previously. My physics education provides me with the knowledge to tutor in this field.

I have experience both with film and digital that extends over quite a few decades. I can tutor everything from simple use of a camera to issues of image degradation by diffraction, depth of field for any subject distance and computer enhancement of images after exposure.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Photography

I have extensive knowledge of how cameras work and what settings are required for various types of photography.

I know the physics of light including refraction, diffraction, achromatic optics, polarization and other effects which can effect photographs. I can utilize and modify ray optics formulas to compute things like depth of field for a variety of sensor resolutions. I have computed diffraction limits as a function of focal stop for various sensors based on pixel spacing.

I have exhibited in state and international photographic expositions. I have won numerous photographic competitions and was second over all in the photographic exhibition at the South Carolina State Fair.

I have a personal collection of over 250,000 digital images and maintain professional level printing equipment. I also have solid darkroom experience with both black and white and color film developing and printing.

I have had prints as large as 44 x 44 inches made from my images and have printed panoramas as long as 25 feet wide with my equipment.

I maintain memberships in the Photographic Society of America and the North American Nature Photography Association.
