About Laura

Hello! I graduated from a private university where I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in History. I also received my master's in Special Education from the University of Phoenix. I am currently teaching under my LBS 1 at a public school in the Chicago land area. I also completed my ESL endorsement in April 2012.

I also have over three years experience as a tutor for math(K-5),reading (K-12+), study skills (K-12+), phonics(K-4), and ACT/SAT prep (9-12) with a supplemental education program. I was also a lead teacher at the center in which I tutored and administered testing to students or prospective students.

I am located in the western suburbs of Chicago, but willing to travel as my job is closer to the city. I love tutoring students and getting to see the results when they bring home better work. It is a great feeling to make a difference in a student's life. This is the main reason that I work with student's with special needs or students who need extra help in a subject.

Thank you for your consideration to make me a tutor for you or your student.

Sincerely,
Laura

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Aspergers

I have also worked with students with Aspergers to help them understand how to make friends, work in the community, as well as develop social skills that will help them increase their academics in schools.

Autism

I'm requesting to work with students on the Autism Spectrum with either Autism, PDD, and Aspergers. I currently work with students on the spectrum and have done so for 5 plus years. I currently work with students based on the TEACCH philosophy, but have also worked with students in ABA therapy. I have taught academics, living skills, as well as community skills to students with Autism. My master's degree focused on Autism; therefore, I completed several research projects in this area. I am confident in my skills while working with these students to manage behaviors in order to teach academics.

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary K-6th is the main area in which I have experience. I was a tutor for two years at a supplemental tutoring company and worked mainly with these grades. I tutored in math, reading, phonics, study skills, writing, and some science and social studies. This age group was a lot of fun to work with on a daily basis. They were very active students, but always willing to get some work done.

I also have experience working with this age group in the school setting. I was a substitute teacher after graduating college in several elementary schools around Decatur, IL. After these positions, I became a permanent substitute teacher for an early childhood/ preschool center where I worked in an early childhood special needs classroom. I worked with children with Downs Syndrome, Autism, and behavior and learning disabilities. From this experience I decided to pursue my masters in special education.

The next year, 2006, I worked as a teaching assistant in three first grade classrooms, then moved to another school where I worked one on one with a third grade student. This student was a behaviorally challenged student. He had to be placed in the special education classroom permanently because of his behaviors. I was responsible for teaching my student all of his lessons and making sure he completed his work. I was also responsible for taking him to computers, music, and lunch.

I completed my masters in special education through the University of Phoenix, and worked at an autistic day center in the Chicago area. I worked with students ages 4-13 on the spectrum.

I currently work in a direct instruction classroom where I teach students on the autism spectrum based on the TEACCH philosophy.

All of these experiences have helped me get to the point that I have in my life, and I believe have qualified me to tutor in the elementary subject areas.

Grammar

I am requesting to tutor in the grammar area. During my time at the supplemental tutoring center, I worked with K-12th graders in reading, math, study skills, and ACT/SAT prep. I taught grammar mostly while teaching ACT/SAT prep. Part of the test deals with grammar and correcting grammar usage in sentences and paragraphs. I taught the students the proper usage of periods, commas, and other punctuation. I also taught the difference between affect and effect, who and whom, and other similar words. There were several grammar items that were covered in the ACT/SAT prep book. I feel qualified to teach grammar because of my experience teaching it for a year and a half. I have seen my papers grow grammatically, and I believe I can help other students grow in this area as well.

Special Needs

I am requesting to tutor in the elementary, k-6th, area because this is the main area that I have experience in. I was a tutor for a year and a half at a supplemental tutoring company and worked mainly with these grades. I tutored in math, reading, phonics, study skills, writing, and some science and social studies. This age group was a lot of fun to work with on a daily basis. They were very active students, but always willing to get some work done.

I am currently working on my masters in special education through the University of Phoenix, and working at an autistic day center in the Chicago area. I will have one student, with autism, starting at the end of November. I will be responsible for charting all of his activities, behavior, and goals.

All of these experiences have helped me get to the point that I have in my life, and I believe have qualified me to tutor in the elementary subject areas.

Study Skills

I am requesting to tutor in the study skills area because I have a year and half experience working in this area at a supplemental tutoring center, as well as, while I was a teaching assistant. I worked with students on different techniques to completing their homework in an effective amount of time. I worked with them on note taking, organization, and outlining. I also worked with them on task schedules where they had to designate what task they were going to complete in a certain amount of time. These schedules were very effective in helping the students with their organizational skills, and all of the other areas of study.
