Hello! My name is Kody, and for four years I've worked -- sometimes part time, sometimes full time -- as an English tutor and writing coach to students from elementary school on up to the college level. Each of the students I've been privileged to work with have taught me something about how better to help young men and women become more effective writers and more incisive readers.

The skills of writing and reading are practical skills, and to be mastered they must be actively practiced. My method is to avoid telling students what to do, in favor of guiding them to develop and strengthen their own understanding and processes. I am not there to do the heavy lifting. I expect students to come prepared to think and engage with the material at hand. My job, as I see it, is to amplify ideas supplied by the student, and to encourage the student to follow logical and thematic threads to their fullest potential.

Of course, along the way we will encounter lessons in the fundamentals of grammar, spelling, rhetoric, logic, and the like, that will need reinforcing. But these are always in service to the larger goal: effective communication. And there aren't many life skills more important than that.

Send me a message today to schedule a session, and I'll get back to you within 24 hours.

ACT English

There are two sides to ACT tutoring. Students must learn the ins and outs of the test itself--the strategies and shortcuts that will help nudge their score higher; but they also must determine which specific topics and skills are most affecting their scores. My tutoring is designed to pinpoint where your student’s troubles lie—whether it’s understanding grammar, test-taking strategy, or breadth of vocabulary—so that our sessions can focus on high yield information and strategies to help your student achieve the score they deserve, fast.

As I see it, an English tutor's job is to help students to engage more deeply with the material, whether it's their own writing or another's. I model active, close reading for students and guide them through the steps of the writing process. Writing and reading are practices, after all: talent is a factor, but so is diligence. Like all skills, to be mastered they must *be practiced.* Students who work with me regularly report increased SAT scores and letter-grade improvement on papers, but to do so, they must put in the effort. I have been tutoring English for middle school, high school, and college students professionally since 2016. I specialize in humanities tutoring. (No offense meant to math or science--I love them, but I don't tutor them.)
Literature,

Literature

I believe that reading well is a practical skill with immense real-world value. There is a reason that the average CEO reads a book per week. I always seek to elicit greater emotional, intellectual, and critical engagement from students with respect to the texts they read. This accelerates their learning, and they become better able to extract the information they need from the texts. As a 1-on1 tutor, I have a great advantage over classroom teachers, in that my lessons are always personal, never general. The approach that works with one student may not work with another, and I am free to adapt and ensure that both students come away with a greater understanding. My primary objective as a literature tutor is your objective--the student’s objective. It’s imperative that parents, student, and tutor are on the same page with respect to this. We will establish this objective in our initial phone consultation. Then, in your student's (free) 30min. orientation session, I will begin to hone my curriculum and approach with this objective in mind. Whether the objective is “to learn annotation,” “to write better papers,” “to read Romeo & Juliet,” or something else entirely, all the activities of our tutoring sessions will be directed toward achieving that result.

Writing is a practical skill. As such, it must *be practiced.* My writing sessions are active and participatory. I work alongside the student through each step of the writing process, from idea generation through final draft, so that they have a model from which to develop their own writing practice. Sessions are personal and fun, but I maintain high expectations. Not so high that students are discouraged, but high enough to drive improvement. Along the way, I provide actionable editing suggestions and expert proofreading. Writing tutoring can be done on an ongoing basis, or in preparation for a specific assignments. Typically, 2 sessions weekly of 1 hour each, or 1 session of 2 hours will work best. For maximal effectiveness on specific assignments, contact me at least 3 weeks prior to the due date. Final proofreading included for free.

Amazing tutor for writing

Kody helped my HS freshman son with his writing assignment that’s due the next day. According to son, Kody is very helpful with his assignment. By the way, my son is not easy to please. Kody even went above & beyond to proofread his writing after the lesson to give him more feedback. Will definitely sign up more classes with Kody.

Great Essay Help & Mid term help

Beyond amazing tutor, he really helped my daughter with her essay and how to structure it and write a strong thesis. He also helped her get a better understanding of what Romeo and Juliet is about and have little handouts that give a general idea of what’s going on with the book. I would highly recommend!!

Very Conscientious Tutor With a Plan

After just one lesson, Kody has demonstrated that he is a very conscientious tutor that evaluates where a student strengths and weaknesses are and then puts together an individual study plan for improvement. His approach and tutoring methods are excellent !
