About Michelle

Hi there!

I have been tutoring math since 1994. I have a Illinois Teaching Certificate in Mathematics/Secondary Education. I've worked at the high school level and have taught as an adjunct instructor at Lincoln Land Community College and at the University of Illinois at Springfield.

Lots of people struggle with math. Studies show that 4 out of 3 people struggle with math (haha). I'm a great tutor because I understand the struggle. Yes, once, believe it or not, I also struggled with math. I do believe I've made every mistake in math known to man. But, then I was fortunate to have a great teacher who opened the door to understanding for me. The math code was broken! It is my mission in life to help others break the mysterious math code (and join the "mathematicians club").

I tailor my methods to each individual student and their learning style, whether it be visual, audial, or kinesthetic (you need to see it, hear it, or do it).

My students have had much success (one even went on to get a Ph.D.!) I think the best compliment I ever got was from a third grade student who sent me a card saying, "Thanks for making me a real mathematician!"

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have been tutoring high school math for 20 years with great results. I especially enjoy helping Algebra I students build strong skills from which higher math skills will be built.

Algebra 2

I have been tutoring high school math for 20 years with great results. I especially enjoy helping Algebra II students build strong skills from which higher math skills will be built. I try to make the skills in Algebra II relevant and applicable to things going on in the student's life, so that the student will understand (perhaps even enjoy!) Algebra II.

Handwriting

I have a degree in Graphic Design from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During the course of my study, I took 2 semesters of Drawing Theory, which emphasized handwriting. I also took Typogrpahy, in which I learned about different fonts of type, how to reproduce them by hand, and how to write with calligraphy. I have also tutored Handwriting at Sylvan Learning Center in Springfield, IL.
I am familiar with the Palmer Method, as well as the D'Nealian Method. Regardless of method taught, it is very important to learn the correct way of forming letters, i.e. start from the top and draw down, start with the correct stroke, hold the writing utensil properly. Learning the proper way to form letters makes handwriting legible, and makes the basis for more advanced handwriting techniques.

Precalculus

I have been tutoring high school math for 20 years with great results. I especially enjoy helping PreCalculus students build strong skills from which higher math skills will be built.

This is not ordinary knowledge that everyone on the street can do; that is what makes PreCalc special. However, many skills are relevant to life skills that student will need to make their lives easier. (Plus we get to "cheat" at pool!)
