Hello, my name is Joel. I am from Peoria Heights, IL. I have been a substitute school teacher ever since the Spring of 2003. Although I have never held a tutoring position, I have substitute-taught in many classes and feel that I have acquired significant experience in the classroom.
My experience in substitute teaching has been mainly at the elementary level including the following subject areas: English, Reading, Phonics, Math, Science, Social Studies, Vocabulary, and Geography.
If for example, I was going to tutor vocabulary studies to students, then I would use the approach of getting more familiar with the dictionary and how to use it wisely. When a student can master breaking down words into syllables and then figure out what one means, then they can develop a better understanding at defining words. This the approach that I would take in assisting students in improving their vocabulary skills. If I was to tutor math, then I would take the approach in solving problems step-by-step and always to use formulas. I believe that it will provide the student with a better understanding in solving math problems. When it relates to reading and comprehending, I have always found it beneficial to highlight all important ideas and terms as I read. This gave me a better understanding of what I was reading and helped myself comprehend better. I would definitely use this approach if I was tutoring students in reading/comprehension. This approach would be beneficial with Social Studies and Science too.
I do believe that my several years of substitute school teaching experience would make me a valuable asset in the lives of students in need of tutoring assistance. I have always had an interest in tutoring along with substitute school teaching, but I have never had the opportunity to pursue individual tutoring. I am very flexible on hours that I would be available to tutor. Flexibility is very important to students as well so my main goal is to work around the students schedule.
My goal is not only to be successful as a tutor, but also to build continuing success for the individual student also. In my opinion, students can only be successful if the proper tools and tutoring assistance are available. I have the desire to achieve these goals with each and everyone student that I tutor. Please feel free to contact me if you may be looking for a reliable, dependable, and well rounded tutor to assist in your child's learning goals.

Joel is so nice person and very kind he has helped me with lots of math problems that I didn't know about and now am really good in math because of him .thanks Joel you are a great tutor.
Joel is always available on the days that we need him, not once has he canceled a session. Before having Joel as our tutor my son didn't do his work at all and at times during tutoring I'll see him look over at me to "save him" but during reviewing his "classwork" that he does himself I can tell these sessions has made him want to get better grades and do better for himself. I want to thank you Joel for all the help. Many blessing to you..
Joel is a good tutor!! I have seen my daughter's science grades improving after working with Joel. She is getting an A- and we are happy with the teacher.
My son and I are lucky to found Joel. He does a great job and is very patient with my son. My son connected with him right away.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
