My name is Alyssa. I am an alum of Illinois Central College with an Associates Degree in Language and the Arts. During my enrollment at ICC, I received much experience in the English Department. With completion of the two prerequisite courses of the English program (ENG 110, ENG 111), I was selected from my academic achievements in said courses, along with a letter of admission to the writing center on campus (The Studio at ICC), to be a student - tutor in their facility. I was present in their academic tutoring environment for a total of (3) semesters.
Upon joining the tutoring team at The Studio, I was required to complete an English Tutoring Course (ENG 112) instructed by the writing center program administrator. This course taught extensively the many terms and agreements teachers and tutors face in teaching writing and the English language. With this knowledge, I was able to assist people of many diverse demographics, to achieve their own unique educational goals. My position as a student - tutor entailed consulting my fellow students on their writing related assignments in all subjects of the curriculum, meeting assignment requirements and understanding the subject matter. I also participated in a campus wide colloquium, with a presentation on Activism in the Writing Center as well as assisting English as Second Language (ESL) students in furthering their understanding and dialogue English. It is my goal to help people further their abilities and have confidence in conveying themselves in academic or societal writing and communication endeavors.
I don't like to just proofread, and put marks on your paper for you to fix. It is my goal to give you the confidence you need to organize and deliver your Powerpoint in front of the entire class, to write an effective and informative paper for your midterm, to be able to compose an effective statement for years to come. I am not here to 'remedy' your 'terrible' writing skills; I am here to enhance the skills that you already have. It is my goal for you to someday not need my services at all, as hard as that may be to believe.
I am equipped with customer service, humanitarian compassion, and a thirst for knowledge of my own. It is my goal to take away the intimidation of assignment requirements in all areas of your curriculum. I may not be an expert in every subject, but with your help and understanding of the course you are enrolled in, I can help you exponentially to organize and compose your papers and presentation to 'Wow!' your professors and instructors. A big word in my vocabulary is collaboration, and I strongly believe we can work together to help each other learn! My name is Alyssa. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
