Sara M.'s Tutoring
Sara M.'s Tutoring
I have always enjoyed teaching and tutoring. The process of seeing and facilitating learning fascinates me: it is so exciting to guide someone to a greater understanding. Moreover, I have volunteered and worked in many schools since the beginning of high school, so I have experience in tutoring, as I will further explore later in this resume.
As of June 12 2015, I completed my first year of college at the University of Chicago. Over the course of the 2014-15 academic year, I volunteered in preschool and kindergarten classrooms at Chicago Free School. I worked with students who were learning to read and lead literacy comprehension activities with them. A couple of the students really blossomed over the course of the year: one girl struggled with reading until spring, so it was rewarding to see everything come together for her.
I also worked as a paid tutor for GEAR-UP at Dunbar Vocational Academy on Chicago's South Side. I tutored students in numerous subjects, with focuses in mathematics, English, and reading comprehension. I usually worked one-on-one with students and tried to explain the theory behind the practice itself. Throughout high school, I volunteered at the YWCA Childcare center, PALS Preschool, and in the first grade classroom of St. Vincent de Paul's CCD program. Each of these experiences taught me how to adapt to and better facilitate children's learning in different ways and with different age groups.
In high school, I took Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. I took Calculus II in college, a proof-based course that provided me skills in more abstract level math. I have always enjoyed math, especially graphing. On the ACT, I received a score of 33, scoring highest in geometry.
English is one of my favorite subjects: I love to read and analyze texts! I took AP Literature and AP English in high school, along with further courses taken in college, such as a three quarter sequence called Readings in World Literature. On the ACT, I received a 36 on the English portion. On the writing portion of the ACT, I received an 11 out of 12.
I would love to work with you and your student!
