Bio

As a certified K-9 educator, I have had teaching experiences in the primary levels (grades 1 and 2), intermediate levels (3, 4, and 5) and middle school levels (6, 7, and 8) in two public school districts. I've had the opportunity to help my students to continue mastering their basic skills, while also inspiring and motivating them to want to learn more. My students have challenged me to be creative, nurturing and most of all, patient.

Common Core

As an Elementary school teacher, I have taught both reading and math content using common core strategies. While most may think that the strategies present are new, they really are not. Common Core provides students the opportunity to break down concepts into smaller, manageable pieces. It addresses the areas in which students are lacking understanding and seeks to fill in those missing areas while teaching the concept at the same time.

Phonics

I am currently endorsed, or highly qualified, in the subject of Language Arts. I have taught 1st/2nd grade students and practiced daily with phonics using scripted text. Using this text students segmented the onsets and rimes of different words to see how different parts of words come together to make that word. Student segmented different phonemes to see how different letter come together to create a word. I also practiced with phonics flashcards for my students with vowels, digraphs, and diphthongs that I created for extra practice and students would later work independently on this skill.
