(A quick clarification of my availability. I live in Forest Park and commute to Northbrook five days a week. I can schedule regular tutoring sessions on weekday afternoons in either location or anywhere roughly in between those two towns. I can only schedule one-off sessions at other times and in other locations. Please feel free to message me if you're not sure if you're in my area.)

I love working with students and enjoy tackling unusual and difficult problems. I have a wide range of experience teaching, and I've worked with students of many different ages, backgrounds, and ability levels. I have a no-drama, tortoise-beats-the-hare approach to teaching, and no matter what your situation is, there's a good chance I've dealt with something like it before.

I'm comfortable teaching and tutoring math through high school trigonometry. I am experienced in Orton-Gillingham reading instruction and with methods of teaching reading, writing, and vocabulary to all ages and ability levels. I have experience working with adults, high school students, middle school students, and students in elementary school, and I have worked with students with a variety of physical, intellectual, and developmental disabilities.

I've been working as an educator in one capacity or another for most of my life. Prior to becoming a tutor, I worked for five years as a special education teacher in the Chicago public schools. Before I got my teaching certification, I worked at the Center for Talent Development at Northwestern University, where I helped teach philosophy to gifted high school students, and worked as a GED and Literacy tutor at the Illinois Youth Center in Warrenville, a maximum security prison for young women aged 14-21. While I was at IYC Warrenville a dozen students passed their GED test (it was previously considered unusual for a single student to pass the test in a year). My success at the prison caused me to decide on teaching as a career-- I worked as a paraprofessional (largely with profoundly developmentally disabled students) while working towards my masters, and immediately went to work in the city once I had my degree. I spent my first few years in CPS teaching LD math classes to high school students, and have more recently taught reading to elementary and middle school students. Throughout my career I've heard from coworkers, parents, administrators, and students that I often have success with students that have had difficulty working with other teachers.

I usually meet with students at the student's home or a nearby public library. My profile lists my approximate availability for regular weekly sessions. I'm also available on most weeknights and weekends for one-time, short-notice sessions for things like upcoming tests and essays. I will provide all necessary materials for each tutoring session, including assessments so that every student and parent can keep track of the progress they are making. Finally, I hold myself to a high standard and do not charge for any session in which a student or parent is unhappy with their experience. Please let me know if you have any questions-- I'm happy to speak with you by phone or in person free of charge. Thank you for your consideration and I hope to hear from you soon!

Prepared, easy to get along with, stays on task, very effective.

Brendan is using the Orton Gillingham method to help my son, who has dyslexia. Brendan has brought all the needed tools and tons of extras to make sure my son engages and gets the full learning from each session. He really has my son working hard!

Brendan is passionate about his work and provides great feedback

Tutoring my son in trigonometry and geometry. My son still has work to do and is comfortable with his methods (which he is not with his school teacher). He explains in a way that my son is not frustrated. He provides helpful ways for me to further assist my son from home. Great at what he does. He teaches to the student, very knowledgeable
