About Rose

I was born to teach. My students say that I make things fun and easy to understand. I love teaching, learning, and being a part of helping my students succeed.

I have found that usually when a student is struggling in a subject, either there are gaps in instruction and skills that were missed or not taught in earlier grades or the student does not understand the vocabulary for that subject. Sometimes the student is making minor common mistakes that need to be pointed out, or has not had enough practice to master a skill. I address all of these issues during tutoring.

My approach includes oral questioning and short written tests to determine a student's weaknesses and strengths, as well as determining the student's learning style so lessons can be meaningful. I communicate with the student and parent to set goals for tutoring sessions.

As we work together, I assist the student with developing the positive mindset necessary for learning. I use variety in lessons to keep learning interesting.

In addition, I provide valuable resources such as notes and relevant websites to encourage the student to practice between lessons, accelerating the learning process.

I have taught 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades in public school and 6th, 7th, and 8th grade at a private school. Over the years I have also tutored students from preschool through 9th grade. In addition, I have tutored adults in Math, Reading Comprehension, Writing, preparation for the GED, and test-taking skills.

My Bachelor's degree is in Elementary Education and I have a Master's degree in Adult Education and Training.

My specialties and my favorite subjects to teach are Math and Language Arts. I love teaching children to read, especially when others have given up on them. I also enjoy experiencing students making the transition from hating math to loving it.

In addition to Math and Reading, I also teach writing, test-taking skills, and organization.

I have tons of resources from over 20 years of teaching and tutoring, including books, workbooks, and hands-on material to help students "see" complex or difficult concepts.

My ultimate goal when tutoring is to get the student to a place where they no longer need me.

Contact me to discuss how I can set you or your child on the road to success before the new school year begins.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. I taught 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade self-contained classes in Chicago Public School for 15 years. I also taught a self-contained middle school 6th - 8th multi-grade class for 6 years at a private school. I am skilled at helping elementary school students succeed.

Phonics

When I worked as an elementary school teacher, phonics was the method I used to successfully teach many struggling students to read. I have also tutored many students in phonics helping them to go on to become successful readers. I taught my daughter to read with phonics when she was 5 years old.

Study Skills

I have taught study skills to both elementary and middle school students for over 20 years. These skills include effective note taking, organization, and planning. I introduce students to various methods of studying and teach them how to use their particular learning style to select study methods to use.

Rose Earns 10 Stars!! Knowledgeable, Strategic and Engaging! — Rose helps my son to understand the language of mathematics. She also teaches him to take notes at 9 years of age, which is not something I learned officially until I was a young adult. This supports his resourcefulness while doing homework. Before Rose, my son would lose confidence and often grow increasingly frustrated with his homework. He would bring home incomplete papers and cry about not kn ...
