About Debra

I have recently completed a Master Degree in Education from a highly accredited educational institution with exceptional grades. My areas of concentration are in elementary education, with middle school endorsements in Music, Language Arts, ESL and Social Studies. I also have a command of the English language, with exceptional writing, reading and vocabulary skills. Education is my second career. Prior to pursuing education, I completed a Master Degree in Human Resources Management, and worked in the business world for over 20 years. I believe my education and real world work experience is very useful in tutoring students. My undergraduate degree is in Music, and have been a recognized musician. I can certainly say that I have been a lifelong learner.

I have served as a substitute school teacher for the past 7 years in both elementary and middle school classrooms. I am certified to substitute teach math, science, language arts, social studies, music and Spanish in both elementary and middle school.

I believe that teaching children how to think responsibly is very important. My goal is to help a student understand their subject matter, and meet other critical standards, such as creativity, expression, and cooperation. Through the use of an assorted set of high-quality assessments, I believe I can reach students that are not great test takers, or who are just not proficient in certain subjects. As a tutor, it's my responsibility to help students to be goal directed, which will motivate them to perform acceptably.

I'm available to meet at local libraries, in a quiet setting with no distractions. I can also travel to other locations that are more convenient for the student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

In my graduate program, I completed EDGEL-421, Methods of Teaching Math in Elementary Education using Common Core standards. I received a grade of A.

I completed an Elementary Education program at Saint Xavier's University in 2013.
