I am a licensed secondary professional educator with endorsements in chemistry, biology, and physics. I just finished my first full year of teaching, and have experience teaching high school courses in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Algebra.
I have successfully tutored many students over the last decade. I bring warmth and a sense of humor to topics that many students initially consider dry, boring, or frustrating. I am always trying to keep students engaged with applicable anecdotes and fun memory tricks to make learning more enjoyable. I also make an effort to apply current educational theory to my lessons.
I went to medical school for 2+ years before leaving (in good academic standing and having passed step 1 of my boards) to pursue other passions. Although I have decided medicine is not the correct path for me, I have a lot of wisdom and encouragement to offer for those who are interested in pursuing careers in science and health care, as well as those studying math and science in middle school, high school and introductory level college courses.
A few of my academic successes include graduating from high school with a 4.0 and earning Magna Cum Laude status in my undergraduate studies. I have also participated in a physical-biochemistry research project that was published in a peer-reviewed, academic journal.
Aside from my training and experience, I believe that my biggest strengths are my ability to put students at ease and my active listening skills. Those are the assets I have found to be most valuable when working with those struggling with ADHD and other learning difficulties.
Asking for help when you are struggling in a subject can be scary, and I make it a priority to be understanding and encouraging with frustrated students. I once had a student tell me that she was really nervous to meet her tutor, but she was completely at ease with me within minutes. Hopefully that will be your experience!
I look forward to working with you! I am a licensed secondary professional educator with endorsements in chemistry, biology, and physics. I just finished my first full year of teaching, and have experience

Kara is an outstanding tutor. She relates to weaknesses and then approaches these weaknesses with a well though out plan. She gets to know her students personally - that is, she can get inside a student's head and make them focus on the task at hand. Kara not only teaches content but strategy as well. She build confidence in her stundent's ability to do well. In summary, I highly recommend Kara as a tutor - she is one of the very best.
My Son, Jahari was struggling in High-School Geometry; finals were literally coming up in 5 days! Kara tutored him twice the weekend before finals and was able to explain things in a way that he could really understand. My Son's grade went from a "D" to a "B"! He was able to complete some old geometry assignments that he was having difficulty finishing, and did very well on the final exam, thanks to Kara's great tutoring!!
Kara did a great job going over physics with my daughter. It's clearly a tough subject for her, but Kara started with the basics and pushed my daughter to think concepts through. She sat as my daughter went over some problems and explained things when she got stuck. Overall, an engaging and knowledgeable tutor.
We are very pleased with Kara. She has a great rapport with my student and supplements her lessons with worksheets to focus on areas of difficulty. She explains the material very well. She has learned a lot and we are very happy that we found her.
My daughter's time with Kara has been terrific. She has been able to help in the exact areas needed for improvement on the ACT. She has offered custom learning, great guidance and is extremely accommodating–– money well spent!
Kara you're so patient and easy to understand. I couldn't have passed my exam without your help. Thanks again.
Kara helped my son understand math by explaining it in a very learn-able way. We saw improvements in his test scores and math anxiety. She was always on time and communicated well through texting.
Kara has an amazing way of connecting with kids. I have watched her work with my son and help him go from confused about elements of Chemistry to a confident student pointed out the areas where he needs her to help him. She is kind, patient and has a wonderful way about her tutoring approach. I would highly recommend her as a tutor for the sciences!
Kara helped tutor my daughter in Chemistry. She knew how to reach out to my daughter and give her a sense of confidence in mastering skills in a difficult subject matter like Chemistry.
I can't say enough good things about Kara! She was an excellent tutor for my freshman son in Honors Biology. Not only did she know the material inside and out, but she was able to communicate it in a manner that was easily understood. She is kind, patient, and very skilled at what she does. We will seek her help again for Honors Chemistry.
Kara has made an immeasurable difference with my daughter's challenges with chemistry. After every tutoring session, my daughter looks forward to the next one! Kara's teaching method, patience, disposition, and genuine interest has provided understanding, reassurance, confidence, and trust. She has fulfilled everything I have looked for in a tutor.
My son's Chemistry is improving week by week, with his teacher at school remarking that he has really noticed a vast improvement. Kara is always punctual and always happy to try to resolve any problems and clarify the issue at hand. The hour a week she tutors at our home has been a real success.
Working with Kara has been beneficial for my daughter in a number of ways. First, her instruction is clear and concise, enabling H. (my daughter) to progress amazingly fast through basic geometry as well as a review of algebra. She is very patient and has a positive demeanor and brings a sense of humor to the subject. Second, Kara couldn't be more ideal to work with, in that she adapts lessons to the students needs perfectly. H. needed help with SAT preparation and Kara went over many test strategies with her, something we had not given much thought to, but now has made the test much less threatening and more like a fun challenge. And last, she's been flexible and accommodating when we have needed to reschedule at the last minute due to medical issues.
I love to see my daughter so enthusiastic about math lessons, (not even her favorite subject)! I would highly recommend her to any student.
Kara is a wonderful tutor! She is very helpful and was helpful to me. I received better scores on my quizzes in math from the tutoring I received from Kara.
Kara has been extremely helpful to my daughter while tutoring her for her summer Chemistry course. She is very patient and knowledgeable! We are very thankful for Kara's guidance and help!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have tutored several students in ACT prep, and have found that every student is different in the approach that needs to be taken. A tutor such as myself can provide a plan aimed at bolstering your student's specific weaknesses, but a book or course can only offer a broad overview. As a result of their hard work, all of my students have seen improvement in their scores with my help!
I have tutored several students in ACT prep, and I am particularly well-equipped to prepare students for the science portion of the exam. I studied science for six years in college and graduate level work, so I have the expertise necessary to help students learn to interpret data and think scientifically. Many of my students have seen science score increases of five or more points!
I have successfully tutored many Algebra I students over the past few years. I am familiar with the concepts that usually give students trouble, and I know how to guide them past those roadblocks. I try to keep the material interesting and relevant to students and to work on their problem-solving skills in the process.
I have successfully tutored several high school Algebra students. I can help students through difficult parts of the material and I work to keep the material relevant to their lives. As a science person, I know many of the practical applications of the math concepts that tend to be left out of math textbooks.
I have the equivalent of a biology minor from college (part of the biochemistry track at my school), and 2+ years of medical school. I have passed the biology content area exam as part of the Illinois state teacher licensing exams, which means I will have a biology endorsement on my secondary education license when I finish school.
I have a bachelor's degree in Chemistry/Biochemistry. I have passed the Chemistry Content Area Exam as part of the series of tests to get a secondary education license in Illinois. This means I will have a chemistry endorsement on my license when I graduate in Spring '14.
Genetics is my absolute favorite subject in biology. In my undergraduate studies I took 2 courses specifically in genetics (in addition to my other biochemistry and molecular biology coursework): an introductory level course focused primarily on inheritance; and a 400-level course called molecular genetics where we learned the molecular biology driving gene inheritance, expression, etc. I did very well in both courses. I participated in lab work focused on cloning the gene that allows a bacterial species to emit light and inserted said gene into E. Coli, making it glow. Also, in medical school (2+ years completed) we studied many specific genetic diseases as well as inheritance patterns. I have a genuine passion for this subject and would love to share my knowledge with others.
Truthfully, high school geometry is probably my favorite subject to tutor. The primary reason I enjoy it is that it gives me so many opportunities to sharpen students' problem-solving skills. I try to help them see the relevance of what they are learning (for instance, proofs can be used to teach logic and reasoning) and to keep it interesting for them.
Physical science falls right within my field of expertise. It is usually a mix of basic chemistry and physics, and I have a good deal of experience tutoring both subjects. When I receive my teaching license in Spring 2014, I will be endorsed in both chemistry and physics. Also, a physical science course will be part of my student teaching experience.
I took 10 credits in calculus-based physics in college. I have experience working with high school physics students, and I have passed the Physics Content Area Exam for my future Illinois secondary education license. I will have a physics endorsement, in addition to biology and chemistry, on my license when I graduate in Spring '14.
I have worked with several middle-school math students and have successfully helped all of them to raise their grades.
