I completed my M.A. to become a reading specialist through Concordia University with a G.P.A. of 3.96. I hold a type 10 Illinois teaching certificate. In the subject of reading, I am trained in a variety of informal assessments, which can be useful to gather information about the student's strengths and areas of need. I've taken a number of courses dealing with strategies to improve reading comprehension, phonemic awareness, phonics skills and attitudes toward reading. For learning disabilities such as dyslexia, I have completed training in the Orton-Gillingham method through the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education. I have a strong base of knowledge in the reading field and can help struggling readers improve significantly.
I am a current classroom teacher. I have also been a reading and math interventionist teacher working with students from kindergarten to 7th grade. Additionally, I have over 11 years of experience as a Montessori and first grade teacher. In the past four years, I have also tutored privately. In my evaluations, I am commonly told I have high creativity, coupled with patience and strong observational skills.
I can tutor at your home, public library or my house. Due to my schedule, I cannot travel more than two miles from my house.

Joan R. has been tutoring my 4 year old son for 10 months in the subject of reading readiness for kindergarten. Joan makes each lesson fun for him and she is always bringing new teaching "toys" and methods to each lesson. She also brings books that match my son's interests. If my son isn't responding to a particular technique, she will try a different approach to get him to engage. Since I live in Oak Park, she comes right to my house which is a huge time-saver for me. Most importantly, my son likes the lessons. He likes Mrs. R. I chose to have him tutored just once a week for 1/2 hour, so that he would become comfortable with his letters and with sounding out simple words, before he starts kindergarten. Even with this limited exposure (and frankly little reinforcement from me at home), my son retains what he is learning and each lesson builds on the previous. I highly recommend Joan as a great choice for a reading tutor.
Joan has tutored my six year old for around 9 months now, three times a week. He was really struggling with his reading and writing and despite me thinking that I 'knew' how to teach him myself, time with Joan quickly proved that it was better left to a professional! Joan takes a very academic approach to her teaching thanks to her background and qualifications. She provides very detailed reviews of each lesson so I know exactly how my son is doing. My four year old daughter also started lessons with Joan a few months ago and is making great progress. I thoroughly recommend Joan for anyone needing some extra help, and in particular if your child is particularly struggling as my son was.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
