About Brian

I'm originally from Oak Lawn and a graduate of Oak Lawn Community High School. After being declined admission to my dream school (Notre Dame), I spent my first year of college at Illinois State University. However, after a strong first year of studies, I earned admission to Notre Dame through a transfer application. This taught me to never give up on one's dream, and to persevere through difficult times with focus, determination, and hard work. By way of this combination, anything is possible.

I spent my last 3 years of undergraduate studies at Notre Dame studying History while also participating in the teacher certification program at Saint Mary's College. I also took several electives in political science and sociology. I graduated on time in May of 2013. After graduation, I participated in Notre Dame's Alliance for Catholic Education (or ACE) program as a Teaching Fellow. ACE is a two-service program blending teaching in an under-resourced Catholic school while also studying to complete a Master of Education degree. During ACE, summers consisted of coursework and intensive teaching preparation. For the rest of the academic year, ACE members traveled to their individual site placement in various cities across the U.S. in order to serve under-resourced Catholic Schools.

My placement was in Brownsville, Texas at Saint Joseph Academy. Here, I taught 9th-grade World Geography & Cultures (4 sections + 1 honors section), and 12th-grade World Religions. I also served as head coach of 8th-grade girls basketball, moderator of Model United Nations, and volunteered as a Student Council assistant. I worked with a predominantly Latino student body (Brownsville borders Mexico), many of whom faced ESL challenges. This inspired me to pursue a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate, which I am currently earning through International TEFL Academy. As a result, I am very comfortable working with students where English is not their first language.

I completed my ACE commitment and earned my M.Ed. in May of 2015. After two years of teaching, I am looking to try my hand as a tutor. I want to be a tutor because my favorite part of teaching was getting the chance to work 1-on-1 with students. It allowed me to tailor my instruction to the individual needs of the student. Additionally, individual meetings also afforded the opportunity to forge and strengthen meaningful, positive student-teacher relationships.

My qualifications include:
-Bachelor's in History (United States concentration)
-Master's in Education; Curriculum & Instruction (Social Science content area)
-National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) member
-Royal Geography Society (RGS) member
-Indiana license in Historical Perspectives; Grades 5-12
-Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Certificate
-Google Certified Teacher (Level 2)

I am a caring, passionate, and highly-qualified young professional ready to help students in whatever ways they specifically need help. If you any questions about me, my teaching style, or anything else not in my profile, always feel free to contact me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I majored in History during my undergraduates studies concentrating in United States History. I have also took several courses specific to History Education at both the undergraduate and graduate level. While I am knowledgeable of all periods of American History, I have worked most extensively in the areas of the American Revolution, Civil War, and the 1960's. For my senior capstone project, I wrote a comparative analysis of various History textbook publications and their portrayal of the American Civil War, analyzing their potential effects on regional culture and public memory.

Geography

I taught World Geography & Cultures for two years, teaching 4 regular sections and 1 honors section. The class was divided into regional units focusing on relevant, diverse geographical issues covering both physical and human geography. Issues ranging from water scarcity to overpopulation to economic development among others. I have fully planned units and materials on Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Europe that I am more than willing to share.

World History

I majored in History during my undergraduate studies which resulted in taking several courses of Ancient History. I am especially proficient in Greek and Roman History. Additionally, I have taught two years of World Geography which contained a historical element. My experience as a World Geography teacher, coupled with the many History courses I took in college, make me very well equipped to tutor World History.
