I am an easy-going and approachable teacher and I am passionate about what I do. I am a certified high school English teacher and I currently teach sophomore and advanced placement English. I have tutored all levels from elementary through high school as well taught developmental reading at the community college. My range of experience allows me to meet any student where he/she is and take them to the level he/she wants to be.
My approach to English is that reading comprehension, vocabulary and writing skills are intertwined. The more a student progresses in one area the more proficient he/she becomes in the other areas. Reading and writing well will allow a student to do well in all other curriculums as well as serve him/her well through college and beyond. I love what I do and I believe my positive approach to teaching has a definite positive effect on my students. I am an easy-going and approachable teacher and I am passionate about what I do. My daughter felt very comfortable with Marilyn. I believe she has a good connection with her. I believe something worked because she got an A- on the test they studied for together. I would like Marilyn to continue tutoring my daughter.
She is very knowledgeable and great at explaining the concepts I needed to learn. She is willing to dig down into the text and help understand it's meaning. Overall, a great tutor.
My daughter enjoyed and learned much in the first session she had with Ms. M. She offered clear and precise instructions that my daughter can follow and use to better her school work. Thank you, Ms. Marilyn.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been tutoring all levels from elementary through high school for over twenty years. I was instrumental in teaching my three children to read starting with the basics of phonics all the way through independent reading. I was actively involved with helping my children with all areas of their schoolwork for the elementary grades. Additionally, I currently tutor a fifth grade student whom I connected with through this website and I have received nothing but 5 star reviews. I tutor her in reading comprehension, writing and math (extended response word problems and critical thinking skills). Although I may not currently be tutoring in other subject areas, I believe reading comprehension skills are necessary for success and can be applied to almost any subject area.
For five years I taught developmental reading at the community college and for a number of students in the class English was not their native language. Additionally, I tutored students for the Title One program for Chicago public schools and some of the students struggled with grammar and writing because English was not the first language spoken at home. I believe this experience coupled with my extensive background in grammar qualifies me to tutor non-native English speakers.
