About Kisha

I love learning, and have been sharing my love of learning for almost 15 years. I began tutoring in junior high school, working with Kindergarten students during my free period. From there I tutored other kids in math, reading, piano and writing.

As a college student, I worked as a student ambassador by tutoring athletes and incoming freshmen at Ole Miss in math, literature, writing and special courses like German and music appreciation. I volunteered as a tutor for the Leap Frog Reading Program, where I worked with 2nd graders who were at risk for reading problems in 3rd grade. I hold a BA in English Rhetoric and Composition and Math Minor.

Since college I have continued to volunteer as well as work in education. I have experience with educational services through Kumon and Huntington. I worked as a substitute teacher until receiving my MA in Teaching from Dominican University. I have been a certified teacher for 7 years, and though my emphasis is grade 5-9 in math I often tutor children in 1st-9th grades at church during homework help hours. I am currently completing my endorsement to teach high school math.

My specialties as a tutor include math; test prep ACT, SAT, ASVAB, GED; homework help; language arts; study skills; and problem solving. I tutor math courses from Kindergarten level math all the way to Pre-Calculus. I also work with college freshmen in Reading, College Algebra through Discrete Math, and writing.

My students enjoy our sessions because I believe that learning and math should be fun. I use both conventional and nonconventional methods. Whenever possible I complete any assignments before tutoring the students so that I can anticipate the troubles that may arise during our sessions.

Consults are free of charge, and if I am not the person for your educational needs, I will BE HONEST AND LET YOU KNOW UPFRONT, NO COST TO YOU!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

ACT English is a mixture of everything language arts-from grammar to spelling to comprehension to writing. I can assist you in learning the content but also in showing you tips on answering questions efficiently.

ACT Math

My tutoring method is designed to assist you with content gaps as well as provide you with some test taking skills. I myself scored a 32 on the ACT in high school without much assistance (there were no affordable tutoring programs in my area). I did well because I learned how to take the test successfully. I also had good exposure to the specific concepts needed to do well in the math section.

I have coached several students in the past 10 years. I have a very specific tutoring manual that I have comprised that focuses on best test taking practices as well as the kind of questions you'll be asked.

ACT Reading

I focus on teaching students test strategies for passing the ACT reading portion. Long term, I work on fluency as well as understanding test question vocabulary.

ACT Science

I currently work with students from a variety of high schools in ACT prep in Math and Science. With my experience with after school programs geared towards ACT as well as Huntington Learning Center, I understand what skills are needed to be successful on the science portion of the test. These skills include reading skills like inferencing, math skills like analyzing data and general critical thinking skills like eliminating obviously wrong answers.

Algebra 1

I have taught algebra I for 5 years to 6-9 grade students, using a variety of methods including traditional paper/pencil and hands on methods. This is probably my favorite type of math because it incorporates all the things you learn along the way and connects with all other types of math as well.

ASVAB

I have taken the ASVAB!

I have also had the opportunity to work with prospective Naval and Army officers and soldiers in preparing for the ASVAB for 3 years during my undergraduate career.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have over 10 years tutoring and teaching experience with grades K-9 in reading, writing, penmanship, and math. I taught 6-8 grade math for 5 years. I also worked in small group instruction with students across grade levels as a Math Coordinator. I have worked with students in special education as well.

Precalculus

I work with students to help them understand some of the more intricate concepts in Pre-Calculus, but I also work to help students to become comfortable with the Algebra skills necessary to complete Pre-Calculus.

Reading

I have been and currently am responsible for RTI classes that address reading deficits in students who are 2 or more grade levels below the target reading level. I focus on reading strategies for comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, fluency, and some phonic/sight word work as needed.

Study Skills

As a certified teacher with experience in urban settings, I have several years of experience teaching students self management or study skills. As a part of my middle school syllabus, students were graded on the following: organization, taking notes, time management, studying vs. homework, classroom etiquette and test taking skills.

Additionally, as part of my ACT prep course, I teach each of my students how to "manage" timed tests, think critically through problems instead of working too hard and process of elimination/ballparking answers before starting to show work.

Great Patient Tutor

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for tutoring my daughter on ACT. You were very patient and through. My daughter liked the way you took your time to teach complex problems and broken down into easily understandable steps. She really enjoyed the session with you. With your help she was able to score high in her very first ACT Test. Will definitively use as my daughter Tutor in future.
