About Matt

Bio

I am a 28 year old former research scientist turned remote educator. I've been in basic science for 8+ years doing bench top biochemistry, physics, and practical engineering. Since COVID has made the in person lab work I used to specialize in much harder, I'm looking to put my skills back to the test to help you in school!

I have heard from my students that I am a fantastic tutor because my career is in science, when people say "but who is going to use math in real life?" I always say ME!...

I have heard from my students that I am a fantastic tutor because my career is in science, when people say "but who is going to use math in real life?" I always say ME! I DO! Because working in science means understanding data, statistics, mathematical models. Why do you need to know what slope intercept form of a linear equation is? Because it lets you use a regression model to find out the relationship between variables under while holding other variables constant.

Tutoring for me is as much about grounding the material in useful topics as it about explaining the mechanics that underlie the material. Sure you could memorize all the formulas in the world for that trigonometry test, or you can learn what those sin() and cos() symbols really mean and derive the formulas on the fly!

Contact me if you want to engage with the material! "Take chances, Make mistakes, and get messy!"

I am a self-taught Python programmer and have 5+ years experience in basic science research using python and matlab to analyse various data.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra is one of my most tutored subjects because many students learn by route how to solve problems without understanding the tools that algebra gives students to explore and manipulate mathematical expressions. Many times a student that comes to me with problems in calculus and trigonometry really has an algebra problem.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I tutored algebra 2 for two years on and off in college. Worked with friends and family to prep them for remedial classes in college and standardized tests.
Biology,

Biology

I have a B.S. in Biochemistry and worked in life sciences for 5+ years. I have done PCR, western blot, ELISA, tones of stuff!
Chemistry,

Chemistry

I have a experience in a physical laboratory where we did NMR and EPR spectroscopy on various spin probes. I handled 1D spectral and 4D spectra-spacial data . I also have a special place in my heart for stoichiometry because it is a beautiful example of conservation of mass!
Geometry

Geometry

I have a B.S. in biochemistry. I tutored geometry in college along with other high school math and science.

BioChemistry was my major in college, and the focus of the first two jobs in research I had. I am skilled at explaining everything from rate kinetics to the major metabolic pathways and making it relevant by providing the real life cases where dis-regulation leads to disease.

Matt is an incredible genetics tutor!

Matt is an incredible genetics tutor for anyone in any advanced undergraduate or semi-graduate course. His ability to dissect very dense genetic papers and answer abstract questions in such a short amount of time is astounding. I have looked for many tutors with his skill set and he was the only one able to answers my questions and help me with my graduate problem sets. I would 100 percent go with Matt if you are looking for any advanced genetics help (or any biology help at all really)!!

Sasha , 3 lessons with Matt

Adjusted learning to my level; Taught me how to teach myself!

Matt did a great job leading me through the PyCharm editor so I could teach myself how to debug and understand the program - basically his method for learning how to learn. Much appreciated! Thanks.

Great compassion and knowledgeable

Matt was very nice with my son knowing he is very shy, he was very friendly toward my son and tried to get him out of his shell first. He did not once act impatient toward him so my son was comfortable talking ro him. My son said he is very knowledge with the subject and he is looking forward to continuing the tutoring session with him.

Shuwan, 1 lesson with Matt

Skilled programmer with excellent knowledge of Python

Matt is an excellent explainer of programming concepts who has a quick apprehension of code and a strong desire to teach. He was able to expediently get into and explain code for sophisticated statistical analysis of clinical trial simulations with me, and I was impressed. I highly recommended Matt as a tutor!
