About Seth

I was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, but have embraced Bloomington-Normal as my home since moving here in 1994. While the magnetism of Illinois State University was the initial draw that brought me here, the comforts of a community that respects education, promotes diversity, and seeks excellence kept me here.

A favorite of story of mine is when, for the first time, I shocked myself when I referred to Bloomington-Normal as home, which it now is. As dyed-in-the-wool a city boy I was, I know realize I have spent more years here than I did in the place of my birth.

While I remain in wonderful terms with my beautiful parents, I am proud of the fact I have established my own family here in Central Illinois. My two daughters Giada (7) and Elsa (2) are my inspiration. The keep me on my toes as much as I challenge them to keep me on mine.

While my background as an original English major, editor at The Daily Vidette, and intern for the Media Relations department at Illinois State University nurtured my English skills, my experience as a chef and working with non-primary English-speaking peers caused inspiration to seek ways to bridge the span of communicative matters. Throughout my elementary education training, particularly literacy interventions, I discovered language is not just about words. As I advanced through my TESOL ESL certification, this became more apparent - that it is not necessarily the specific words we are using, but how we use our methods of communication.

I am a history "geek" at heart, yet as an educator, I have learned memorization of what happened before simply allows us to re-hash mistakes, rather than learn from the past and craft a wiser future. While we must be reverent in respecting oppression and tactful in celebrating accomplishment, there is a reason why our world has never reached Utopian status. Awareness, rather than acceptance is the catalyst to studying socially.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
