About Tenzin

I am an experienced tutor with a true passion for web development, chess, math, and guitar. I have been tutoring professionally for over three years and have had great results with kids ranging from 5 to 15 years of age to adults as well as non-traditional students.

I am a web developer by the day. I built web applications and websites with html5, css3, javascript, jquery, bootstrap, Angular js, ruby on rails, PHP and so on. I have been programming for many years. I learned HTML and CSS when I was in 4th grade. I wrote my first line of code 7 years ago in C++ for a simple "hello, world" program. Every since then I have programmed in various programming languages from java and c to web languages like javascript to database languages such as SQL. I have experience building and deploying apps to the apple's Appstore as well as Android play store. Built many industry standard websites and dynamic web apps following responsive design principle. Throughout the years I have been programming, I have also tutored over hundreds of students. These students include middle school children writing their first "Hello, world" program to high school and college students taking various computer science courses to adults and professionals changing careers and entering the world of software development.

I learned how to play the guitar when I was 16 and haven't stopped playing since. Growing up, life was never easy but the one thing that I had was my guitar and the freedom to play it. Through the times of getting bullied in school to the unfortunate circumstances having to depart from my own mother, I strummed my way to positiveness and happiness. Every time I had a bad day, I would pick up my guitar and instantly feel like there is nothing else going on in the world; all there was was me and the guitar. And I want to have my students to have the same freedom and ability to play the guitar and have one more reason to be happy and stay positive. I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by.

No matter what culture we're from, what tradition we have, or what race we are, everyone loves music.

Similarly to guitar, I learned how to play the chess when I was just 14, and have fallen in love with the game ever since. I find it fascinating that two individuals can sit through hours battling with their minds without saying a single word. I believe that everyone should learn to play chess, especially for kids as it helps their learning ability, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

As the once Chess World Champion and political leader, Garry Kasparov, said himself, "Chess helps you to concentrate, improve your logic. It teaches you to play by the rules and take responsibility for your actions, how to problem solve in an uncertain environment." And this the reason I love teaching chess.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Very knowledgeable, great at explaining the basic concepts — Tenzin quickly understood how much knowledge I had with JS and where he needed to start to keep me moving forward. The homework assignments he gave were tough, which gave me an idea of what areas I need to focus on while we're not meeting and what we need to go over when we do meet for a tutoring session. Looking forward to learning more with Tenzin! ...
