An artist in my free time, I enjoy getting creative in helping students learn. My first priority is helping the student succeed and enjoy learning in the process. With my special education training I look first at why the student may be struggling, then find ways to either remedy the problem or find a way around it.

I am a certified teacher for elementary special education in New York and Utah. I have taught in public schools for about 15 years, usually at the upper elementary level. My certification is for Learning Disabilities and Behavior Disorders. I have also been a director at a non-profit tutoring center and a teacher at a residential treatment center for children/youth with emotional disorders. As a tutor I would prefer to work with materials from the student's school assignments, augmenting those materials with methods specific to the student's learning style.
Phonics,

Phonics

I am certified in New York and Utah as a special educator. I have taught children with reading problems for more than 15 years in the public school and private sectors. Phonics may not work for all children, but for those who it might help or be the key for learning to read, schools are replete with phonics materials. I would prefer to draw on the student's school materials and augment with additional materials to support those programs. Responsible family members will be key in helping the student practice reading in the home to reinforce any reading lessons with a tutor or the school.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

Studying should be productive or it is a waste of time. Knowing how to study is key to learning new materials and practicing new skills. I have taught children and youth in a variety of educational settings and am aware of the high demands and importance placed on students' completing assignments. I am certified as a special educator for students with learning disabilities and behavior disorders in New York and Utah. For each student my core goal is to help him/her enjoy learning and succeed at whatever level they are capable.

I began my own piano lessons in the first grade and continued through elementary school, but continued playing both the piano and the organ through the 12th grade. In college I took lessons for a year on the organ. I am currently the organist in our church and accompany the choir on the piano.

Special Needs

ADHD,

ADHD

I have current teaching certification at the elementary level in New York and Utah. I have worked with a number of children diagnosed as ADD/ADHD in the public and private sectors. The key to encouraging children to learn is to present new information in a way they can both understand and be interested in knowing about. All children need to be successful. All children deserve a chance to focus on and buy into their own learning endeavors.
Dyslexia,

Dyslexia

I am currently certified as a special educator for children/youth with learning disabilities in New York and Utah. Almost all of my teaching experiences have been with children struggling with learning to read. Because of my early training in learning disabilities, I look first for a student's learning strengths, then whatever issues may be holding him/her back from succeeding. As a hands-on learner I struggled learning to read trying to memorize words visually and orally in elementary school. Consequently, when a child can't read, I will look to understand why and teach to that child's strengths rather than bombarding them with techniques already failing him/her in the classroom.

Very creative!

I love how Ms. Esther thinks outside the box in meeting the needs of my three kids. They all struggle with focusing and she has helped them all to progress. They look forward to her coming every week!
