I have a B.A. in English and a M.Ed. with a concentration in writing and grammar. I am passionate about helping college, high school, and ESL students and adult professionals to better express themselves in writing. I have over 10 years experience in teaching and tutoring writing, grammar, and ESL, and over 6 years in proofreading and editing graduate and PhD dissertations. I approach tutoring and editing with a strong pedagogical background and deep appreciation for maintaining the student's voice while guiding them toward writing that is clear, concise, and polished.

Qualifications
I have many years of study and experience in advanced traditional and linguistic grammar, college composition, rhetoric, literature, and ESL/ESOL. I have had graduate-level training and professional development in tutoring practice and pedagogy at a university writing center. My background is in college admissions and teaching high school English; I've read thousands of student papers, including college application and scholarship essays. Having been trained by the makers of the ACT English exam, I tutor the content of the exam along with test-taking strategies that help students boost their ACT English score, often reaching or exceeding their goal scores. I have extensive proofreading and editing experience, having edited PhD dissertations and faculty copy for submission.

Specialities
Academic Writing, College Application and Scholarship Essays, Grammar, ACT/SAT English and Writing exam, ESL/ESOL

Methods
I individualize my sessions by collaborating with the student to establish the agenda, prioritize the objectives, and write out clear "next steps". We productively focus on the established agenda as I ask clarifying questions, indicate issues, and model solutions tailored to the unique demands of each student and each task. Whether I am helping with the first steps of idea generation for an essay or proofreading the final draft of their dissertation, my students quickly find that, after working with me, they are writing more productively, strategically, and deliberately.

Tutoring Philosophy
Having read thousands of college student essays, I've developed a deep appreciation for the challenges that students face when attempting to balance their voice with the rhetorical demands of the writing prompt. I address those challenges through collaboration with the student--making the writing and revision process more engaging, informative, and fun and bringing a depth and strength to their writing that may not otherwise be possible. The end result is not only a better paper, but a writer with a better understanding of the principles of good writing.

I am currently accepting new students, so if you are excited about what my brand of tutoring can do for you and your writing, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to working with you.

ACT English,

ACT English

My ACT English tutoring plan helps students develop a strong skill set to master the three parts of the English exam: Grammar, usage, and rhetoric, Reading, and Writing. I individualize the plan to meet each student’s goal for the ACT--whether it’s to improve grammar and usage, reading, writing, or all three. English Grammar and Usage: Students learn to quickly identify and correct errors in the grammar and usage conventions typically used on the exam. These conventions, which comprise 40 out of the 75 English questions, are: Punctuation: internal and end-of-sentence punctuation, with emphasis on the relationship of punctuation to meaning and avoiding ambiguity. Grammar and usage: agreement between subject & verb, pronoun & antecedent, and modifiers & the word modified; verbs and verbals; tense and aspect; and idiomatic usage Sentence Structures: compound and complex sentences, relationships between and among clauses, conjunctions, placement of modifiers, shifts in construction and focus, a Rhetoric: phrases, nominal structures, revising for clarity and conciseness Reading: Students learn ways to quickly analyze the four subject passages-- social studies, natural sciences, literature, and humanities— to identify the main idea, compare ideas, generalize ideas, identify relationships such as cause-and-effect, and define words based on context Writing: Students learn to use advanced rhetoric to write a unified, coherent essay that clearly states an insightful perspective on an issue and supports a nuanced, precise thesis. They learn to develop the significance of the issue in logical and organized paragraphs. Test-taking Strategies: Students learn to unpack each multiple-choice item and eliminate wrong answers. They learn to engage with the readings and pay close attention to questions. They learn strategies for when they are stuck on a question, word, or section of a passage. They learn the difference between reading, skimming, and scanning. And last, but certainly not least, they learn how to manage their time.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

I began my graduate studies in education with courses such as Reading and Learning Disabilities, Assessment and Diagnostic Teaching of Reading, Human Development and Reading, and Literacy for the Exceptional Child. As a high school English teacher, I was committed to improving the literacy challenges of my students who struggled with reading. While I’m a born reader, I wanted to understand how the brain learns to read and why decoding skills frustrated bright students. My strong background in graduate-level instruction in reading and my experience in teaching reading as a high school English teacher allow me to offer personalized reading instruction to any student. Whether my students are preparing for the ACT, SAT Reading exams or reading literature and poetry for high school or college assignments, they all enjoy gains in their reading comprehension and speed.

I help students with all of their essay prompts by guiding them through the steps of the writing task: understand the demands of each prompt, generate ideas at the prewriting stage, elaborate and revise the rough draft, and proofread the final copy. Throughout the process, my students strengthen their ideas, spot weak rhetorical and organization choices and make appropriate choices, and correct grammar and other surface-level concerns. After working with me, students have developed a polished essay in their own voice. The result is more confident students and more readable, immersive, thought-provoking, and natural-sounding papers. My background as assistant director of admission at a highly selective college allowed me to guide prospective students throughout the entire application process, from helping students with admission and scholarship essays, to final admission and scholarship recommendations, to assisting with matriculation and enrollment.

Marianne was great!

Marianne was fantastic. She responded quickly, made herself available that same day, and really helped my son with his assignment. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a great tutor.

Highly knowledgeable tutor - able to get to the crux of the matter

Marianne provides detailed session feedback which is insightful, encouraging and helpful for my son and me, as a mom. I'm very impressed with the time and effort she puts into lesson preparation as well as really trying to determine how to best help the student. Thank you!

Wendy, 20 lessons with Marianne

Very patient and helpful, superb tutor!

Marianne helped my daughter edit the school application essays. In addition to grammatical mistakes normally found in the essays of a second language writer, Marianne gave us advice in presenting the right message for school. I would love to work with Marianne again for the essays of my second child.

Fai, 7 lessons with Marianne

The issue at hand

Marianne shared a concept about rhetorical analysis that I was completely ignorant about. What I found most helpful about her tutoring advice was how my college paper lacked an issue that causes interest and debate. I wish learned about writing issues sooner, yet Marianne worked with me to show how my profile essay can include an issue for an audience to consider and discuss. I highly recommend Marianne for tutoring.

Gabriel, 3 lessons with Marianne

Knowledgeable and extremely helpful

Marianne was an excellent tutor. She started the lesson getting background information and trying to understand my goals. She then reviewed my essay and provided valuable feedback. Thanks so much!
