Illinois Wesleyan University (Mathematics)
Hello! I am a 32-year-old licensed teacher who specializes in high school level math. I have a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics (Illinois Wesleyan University) and another BS degree in Education (Trinity Christian College). My areas of expertise is Pre-Algebra up to Algebra 2/Trigonometry, although I can tutor in other subjects such as Discrete Math and Pre-Calculus as well (if given a day notice, so I can brush up on my skills ;)). I have 3 years full-time teaching experience and over 5 years tutoring experience. I am local to Naperville and can meet almost any time! :)
My favorite part about tutoring is helping students understand concepts that they struggle with in school. Being able to explain things 1-on-1 has made such a big difference in my experience, and I feel tutoring is the best way to help students understand and build their math skills. I also believe in building a strong foundation, so I like to do a quick test when I first work with students which gives me a great idea of how strong or weak they are so I know what areas need work in addition to working on the current material. Since I earned my degree in Math first and Education second I believe I have a much better understanding of math and its concepts and can communicate that to students to help them appreciate and get along with math throughout their lives.
I have a great ability to show students how math concepts work, focusing on the "why" instead of just procedural "hows." Anyone can show someone how to solve an equation, but when the student understands why things are done the way they are, they become more independent problem solvers and can work on more complex problems because they know the laws of math and know what they can and cannot do. They aren't just memorizing procedures.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me any time! Thanks and have a great day! Hello! I am a 32-year-old licensed teacher who specializes in high school level math. My daughter feels much more confident in Algebra 2 and Geometry after meeting with Justin only 2 times. He is easy to work with, and makes his students feel comfortable. We will continue to work with Justin.
My son had a great first session. Justin made it easy for him to feel comfortable asking questions, and he's looking forward to future sessions. I appreciate you jumping in right away and making progress.
Math has always been my high-school aged son's weakest subject. Justin has been helping him this summer with Algebra 2 so he can make up an exam he missed the last school year. Thanks to Justin's thorough and engaging tutoring, my son feels that he is learning math better than he ever did in school. I highly recommend Justin as a math tutor.
Justin is patient and has a way to assist my son to understand the math problems which has given my son confidence when tackling a test. Justin is very dependable and prompt. And email what was accomplished in each lesson
My son met with Justin for his first session. He was very pleased. He helped him to review concepts in preparation for his Algebra 2 exam this week. Also provided questions for my son to ask his teacher. My son expressed that Justin is patient and easy to understand.
Great teacher. Smart and knows how to teach. A combination that is hard to find. My daughter is extremely happy and feels confident about her abilities. Justin gave her this confidence and we are very thankful to him for it.
This will come in handy to show progress and content of what he learns this year. Thanks so much Justin!
Our high school junior is enrolled in Algebra II. She recently found that she was not fully understanding the concepts that her instructor was teaching in the classroom, so she asked if we could get her a tutor. We found Wyzant and contacted Justin for help. So far, so great! He is organized, on time, smart and able to clearly explain Algebra II concepts to our daughter. Plus, he has a great sense of humor, enjoys what he does, and it turns out he lives very close to us! So many positives! We highly recommend Justin!!
Justin helped my son feel relaxed and capable. He reviewed the basics and made helpful suggestions. He was exactly what we were looking for.
Justin helped my daughter with Discrete Math tonight. Hi was flexible and helped us on short notice. It is a positive experience once again.
After just one lesson, my daughter feels much more confident about her Algebra skills. We are looking forward to seeing her progress. Justin did an excellent job pinpointing just what areas she needed the most help with, and set up a plan to get her up to speed. Thanks Justin!
Justin helped Carson look at math in a way that was less stressful and confusing. He was able to pick up the tools necessary to unlock his potential in Algebra!! One happy Mom and student!! It was exactly what he needed to feel comfortable. THANK YOU JUSTIN!
Very patient, my daughter really enjoyed her first lesson. She feels positive that he will help her with her ACT.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 at a High School in Chicago Heights, IL for 3 years. I am currently working my 3rd year for ExcelEdge, Inc. as a Math ACT teacher where we teach students test-taking techniques to achieve higher scores on the ACT.
I've taught Algebra 1 for 3 years at the high school level, and have been tutoring ACT math for 3 years. I have a great grasp of the concepts and can explain them multiple ways to make sure every student can understand.
I taught Algebra 2 at Bloom High School for one year.
I have over 4 years teaching experience with Geometry, having taught it for 3 and a half years full-time at a high school, and 3 years of teaching ACT math prep classes which has a lot of Geometry content (each program lasts for 8 weeks and I'm currently in my 3rd year). Geometry has been one of my favorite subjects to teach!
