About Eugene

I have over fifteen years of experience tutoring to high school, college, and graduate students. My specialty lies in tutoring mathematics in several areas such as calculus, elementary/abstract algebra, linear algebra, differential equations, real/complex analysis, and topology. In my experience, I've found that students learn mathematics most efficiently through conceptual-based learning and active engagement in problem solving. Because of this, I will teach you problem solving strategies and help you improve mathematical proficiency through challenging problems. I will also help you build mathematical intuition needed to break down difficult concepts.

I give both individual and group sessions. I am usually available in the mornings and afternoons, but I'm flexible with students. My sessions are of two types; one for assigned work (homework, tests, etc.) and one centered on problem solving techniques and methods of proof. I assign problems once a week, to give you more practice with what you've learned. I have a 24-hour cancellation policy, but I offer makeup sessions.

I look forward to hearing from you! I'll help you succeed in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

In a Collegiate Scholars Program, I taught Algebra to gifted high school students. My approach to teaching Algebra is conceptual. I train my students to make connections between the abstraction of Algebra and real-world applications.

Differential Equations

My area of research lies in the field of nonlinear partial differential equations. I have given a guest lecture on this course, where the focus was on Laplace transforms, convolution, and integro-differential equations. With my extensive knowledge of the subject, I believe I am qualified to tutor differential equations.

Discrete Math

Having earned a master's degree in mathematics, I have the knowledge and experience necessary to teach discrete math. I have taken courses in logic, number theory, probability and statistics, and linear algebra; all these courses are a part of discrete math.

Finite Math

Having received a master's degree in mathematics, I have the knowledge required to tutor finite math. Notably, I've taken courses in probability and statistics and linear algebra, both of which are a part of finite math. I have over five years experience teaching the subject to college students, using both conceptual and analytic approaches.

Geometry

B.S., Benedictine University
M.S., University of Chicago

Linear Algebra

I have done graduate level work in linear algebra, which helps me see the subject from a broader perspective than someone who has only been exposed to undergraduate linear algebra. I have also tutored linear algebra using conceptual and problem-oriented approaches. In addition, I use linear algebra methods regularly.

Precalculus

I have a B.S., Benedictine University, and M.S., University of Chicago.

Learned so much in a short period

I was in desperate need of a tutor to teach me precalc before going away to school and taking calculus. Eugene came through and he was able to teach and help me understand everything from basic trigonometry to understanding how to find basic derivatives. He helped me to understand the mechanics of solving problems and make sure I completely understood the problems rather than just memorizing.
