Benedictine University (MBO)
I have a passion for teaching, training and development. While not certified as a teacher, I have 20+ years in corporate communications, training and development. I also have 10+ years experience working directly with elementary and junior high students through our church.
I have 8+ years experience working directly with multiply handicapped children (under 18), primarily behavior and learning disorders. Additionally, I am a District 203 Mom of two great boys - one a sophomore in college and the other in 8th grade.
My youngest suffered several strokes, during the summer of 7th grade. He has made a remarkable recovery, but still has Aphasia. We are working daily on his reading, writing and language (expression) skills. I have worked arm-in-arm with his RIC and Edward Hospital therapists and his teaching team at school. Thru this on-going experience, I have become well versed in learning strategies and advocacy.
I am three classes shy (yes, three!) of my degree at Benedictine. Unfortunate circumstances have prevented me from completing my degree to date. This is still a goal of mine.
My teaching style is a partnership with the parent/guardian. It is critical for us to be in sync for the student to be successful. I am confident in my abilities to help most any student. If, however, I feel I cannot help your student, I will be honest and forthright with my reasons. As a parent, I would want and expect that courtesy as well.
If there is an IEP, it is important for me to understand the content, in order for me to align my approach. I challenge students to stretch themselves, but also realize not every student learns in the same manner. Flexibility is key. It is not my intent to overwhelm them. I can joke with the best of them, but also hold them accountable to get the work done.
My schedule is limited to evenings and weekends; however, if my schedule permits, I am open to after school sessions. I do not conduct sessions in the student’s home, as I feel it is important to remove distractions. I also do not transport students to/from sessions or provide drinks/snacks, so please make sure your student has those prior to the session. I strongly encourage having a refillable water bottle available, during the session(s).
My cancellation policy is an 8-hour notice, as I would also need to make alternate arrangements for my own son.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping your student achieve greater success! I have a passion for teaching, training and development. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have 20+ years in coaching, training & development and created, developed and implemented programs. I have utilized tools and/or books including, but not limited to: Myers-Briggs, Dale Carnegie, Steven Covey, Marcus Buckingham, "Crucial Conversations," "What Color is Your Parachute," "Strengths finders," and 360 degree reviews.
I have instructional experience in the following phonics strategies: analogy, analytic, embedded, spelling, and synthetic.
Each strategy suits some students better than others, Some children will already know letter-sound correspondences, and some will even be able to decode words, while others will have little or no letter knowledge.
I am able to assess the needs of the student and tailor instruction to meet specific needs.
For students to be successful in school and in the years to come, they must learn to establish goals, choose environments conducive to studying/working, and time management. I will work with your student to develop an appropriate plan for success. Through specific daily activities, your student will become more independent; have a greater sense of pride and increased self-esteem.
