Illinois State University, Normal (Earth and Space Ed. )
My name is Corey P., as a graduate of Illinois State University, I have five years of private tutoring experience. I also am a high school Earth Science and Environmental teacher at Oswego East High School. I have extensive tutoring experience in several subjects and all grade levels including: writing, reading, all sciences, pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and all social sciences. I, also, have extensive experience tutoring ACT prep, TAP (formerly the Basic Skills Test), and PSAT. At Illinois State I graduated with a degree in Earth and Space Science Education. I graduated with a 3.65 cumulative GPA and Cum Laude Honors. Among my other passions include reading, writing, and running. My writing, reading, and science experience has allowed me to tutor a wide range of students. My tutoring philosophy is straightforward and to the point. I put students in the best positions to learn. I really focus on simplifying material and putting into terms where the student can understand. I strive to get my students to understand what they are learning, rather than memorizing it. I help students relate material to their lives using real world examples and experiences from their life. I encourage my students to ask why and question the world around them. I constantly ask my students, "Why is this important to you? Why are we even learning about this?" This allows them to see the application to their life and why certain subject matter is important to learn. If a student wants to be great in math, I focus on improving their basic math skills. If a student wants to be a great writer, I show them that they need to be a great reader first. If a student wants to be great in science, I show them that they have to be a great observer. Most importantly, I make tutoring fun. My students learn to appreciate and enjoy the learning process. My ultimate goal for my students is for them to walk away from tutoring sessions with a passion for learning and growing into a lifelong learner. Finally, I don't view myself as just a tutor. I view myself as a mentor and role model for my students. I strive to be someone that my students can count on to be there for them when they are struggling. If I can accomplish that then I have done my job.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have prepared students for the ACT for five years now. Most recently I helped a student improve his score from an 18 to a 25.
Having worked with ACT students for years, I have helped many of my students significantly improve their scores in all four of the subject areas. I recently helped a student improve his score from an 18 to a 25.
I have been a competitive runner for ten years now, and have done extensive research on fitness and the latest trends. I ran four years of varsity track and two years of varsity cross country in high school. I have run every event from the 400 meter dash to the marathon. I have also run the Boston Marathon. I feel more than qualified to teach fitness because I know, first hand, what it takes to compete at a high level and stay in great shape. I have also taken anatomy classes, sports medicine, and several biology course that have allowed me to understand the science behind many of the fitness principles I teach.
I am a self-taught acoustic guitar player, with extensive experience writing my own songs on guitar as well. I show students how chords relate to each other. I also teach them about chord structure, the key a song is in, and how to transpose music.
I have tutored study skills for five years now. I have also hosted study skill workshops during my time at Illinois State University. I have have extensive experience helping students prepare for the ACT exam and other standardized tests. When it comes to studying for exams, I promote quality over quantity. The key is for students to know what to study and how to study it. It saves them both time, and it guarantees greater success on exams.
