About Mary

Hi my name is Mary, and I love to teach/tutor. I have plenty of experience in tutoring the sciences to both high school and college level students.

I have my State approved teaching license for General Science, my master's degree in Chemistry, and my bachelor's degree is in Chemistry and Biology. I decided tutoring and advising are my favorite parts of teaching science, thus I am here to help!! I have tutored all through my college days and into graduate school. While in graduate school, I tutored biology/chemistry and I volunteered to tutor chemistry to students with learning disabilities. When I was working towards my teaching license I tutored high school and college level physics.

My love to teach/tutor translates into you getting someone who is willing to go the extra mile to make sure you truly understand the subject at hand. Tutoring/teaching involves helping the student understand the subject better as well as how to learn better. By helping you (the student) in all aspects of your learning you will do better both in this class AND beyond this class for many years to come.

I love to see the light bulb 'click on' when a student understands a concept or problem we are working. Since I am so very excited about science my students get excited (or at least will put up with learning :) about science; Excitement is infectious especially when I use student directed examples to explain concepts (you like food, here let me explain science in cooking terms).

Enjoy the subject!!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I have a BA and MS in Chemistry. I have tutored General Chemistry since 2003, taught General Chemistry I and II laboratories, and Managed the Stockroom for all levels of General Chemistry labs at a large university. I have also tutored High School Chemistry and have a teaching certificate in high school science.

I find chemistry in every day things, and so I use every day things to relate students to chemistry!!

Geology

I have taught High School level Earth Science, taken College level Earth Science, and love to rock-hound. I also have preformed as a Crystallographer (basically I know a lot about crystals and rocks)

Organic Chemistry

I know organic chemistry very well as demonstrated by my years of tutoring organic chemistry, starting in my undergraduate years and all through graduate school. My masters in chemistry means I am well versed in all areas of chemistry, which includes organic chemistry. While I was the lead stockroom manager for Colorado State University educational laboratories, I tutored teaching assistants as well as students on organic chemistry. I am able to help students learn mechanism, common chemical reaction types, and study tips necessary to do well in organic chemistry. I know the major types of chemical reactions and the commonly named reactions. I am able to help students become grand strategists of synthesis, one of the most difficult types of organic chemistry reactions.

Physics

I have taught physics to high school students when I obtained my secondary school teaching license in CO about 6 yrs ago, and I tutored college students at Colorado State University.
