Teaching is an art. The experience, training and certifications of your tutor can make a real difference in the rate of progress made by the student.
I am a fluent Spanish-English bilingual speaker with State of IL. elementary and secondary teaching certificates as well as an administrative certificate. I have a master's degree in Spanish and have taught beginning, intermediate and upper levels of Spanish to over 3,000 students of all ages. I've taught ESL to students from over fifty different countries including India, China, Poland, Russia, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Mexico, the Philippines, and more. I have taught ESL in Spain, the Dominican Republic, and Colombia to executives and other adult students.
In addition to my WyzAnt students, my experience as a tutor includes having worked with students from the United States, facilitating their acquisition of Spanish language competency, as well as with many students from other nations. I have also tutored my ESL students in subject matter content areas such as history, English language grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension.
In 2007, I received my Doctorate in Education (Ed.D.) from Loyola University. From 2008 to the present, I have taught over twenty university courses to teachers and principals who were seeking their ESL/Bilingual endorsements. These courses included ESL Foundations, ESL Methods and Materials and Cross-Cultural understanding.
The Illinois State Board of Education has approved me as a Provider of Continuing Professional Education for teachers in Illinois. That means teachers will earn credits by attending my seminars.

In just the few sessions we have had with Maureen I have been so impressed by her patience and cheer while teaching my daughter. My daughter isn't the best oral learner so things have to be repeated more than usual for her. My daughter is aware of that and often will feel bad about herself but not with Maureen. We really do appreciate that. My parents are native Spanish speakers and are very impressed with Maureen's Spanish.
She is patient, thorough, incredibly knowledgeable, and has a great sense of humor. I learned more than I thought was ever possible. I highly recommend Maureen K to anybody who wants to work on their Spanish.
Maureen is very skilled. We spoke in Spanish for the entire hour. That was cool. I didn't think I'd do that well. She patiently told me words I didn't know, gave me correct examples of word order, and gently corrected my many mistakes -- all within the context of a real conversation, where I felt that much was actually discussed. She also gave me a referral for a grammar textbook, which I've ordered from the local bookstore. I am happy and impressed. My brain was tired after a whole hour speaking Spanish, in the best possible way! I am looking forward to my next lesson.
Maureen will be glad to know that my final grade in Spanish III at COD was a C. Given my level of pre-test jitters, the C was most welcome. By the way, I found out that several of my relatives who live in Spain struggled with Spanish and needed tutors even though they heard Spanish all day every day. I guess you helped me overcome a hereditary mental block against Spanish. Thanks so much for your patience.
Great tutor for learning pronunciation. Example was "eye" for hay. Good memory jogger for the three amigos for le gusta and les gustan.
Señora Maureen is an excellent teacher and amazing woman. She has a wealth of knowledge about so many things and incorporates these things into our Spanish lessons. I truly believe with her expertise and my willingness to work hard I'll be fluent by the end of the year. In addition, she's patient, tender in her approach, and has a great sense of humor.
My son has really benefited from Maureen's help. He told me she was a much better teacher even than the one at school. She helped him raise his letter grade one level in the time she was with us. She was also very amenable to days and where we had the sessions. Thanks a bunch Maureen!
Maureen is a wonderful lady with plenty of knowledge about the Spanish language. She is very soft spoken and takes her time not to rush through the information. It's reassuring to know that my son can have someone with her experience and kindness help him through a difficult subject.
Maureen's Spanish lessons have helped my son a lot. She is very proficient in the subject and is able to teach the intricacies of the language. She is also very patient.
Maureen tutored my daughter with my son and I present. We all enjoyed listening to Maureen speak and encourage her to use the Spanish language. It was quite a family event. Thank you Maureen!!!
Maureen and my daughter are developing a good Espanol relationship. Keep up the great work Maureen!!!
My daughter related that she LIKES having a Spanish tutor! I think she is beginning to understand the power of utilizing a language. Thank you Maureen!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a high school ESL teacher, over the course of close to 20 years, I have taught and tutored English as a Second Language to more than 500 students from more than fifty different countries.
A few of these countries are:
India, China, Poland, Russia, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Mexico, most of the countries in South America, the Philippines, and more.
I have, also, taught ESL in Spain, the Dominican Republic, and Colombia to executives and other adult students.
In addition to ESL, I've tutored many of these students in subject matter content areas such as history, English language grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension.
In 2007 I received my Doctorate in Education (Ed.D.) from Loyola University.
From 2008 to the present I have taught over twenty university courses to teachers and principals who were seeking their ESL/Bilingual endorsements.
These courses included ESL Foundations, ESL Methods and Materials and Cross-Cultural understanding. Those are about how to teach English as a Second Language.
I hold current elementary and secondary teaching certificates as well as an administrative certificate.
Based on my credentials and experience, the Illinois State Board of Education has approved me as a Provider of Continuing Professional Education for teachers in Illinois. By attending my seminars, teachers learn the fine points of teaching English as a Second Language and are awarded some of the credits they require to maintain their teaching certifications.
Foreign language students learn how to talk by talking. Much like children learning their first language, foreign language students listen and imitate.
I model the words students will need to use in the classroom to communicate.
By encouraging students to speak in the foreign language, they learn more sooner and remember more of the words. For example the students might hear, "Abra su libro a la pagina siete" in Spanish rather than English. (Open your book to page 7). I don't say, "Hello" to the students I tutor. I say, "Hola". When I'm using a new word or a word my student may have forgotten, I help them to guess what it means or I use a similar word to jog their memory.
Singing is another effective way to learn and have fun. Students remember what they sing for a longer period of time than just talking or looking at lists.
The lessons are geared to the individual child, age-appropriate and interesting.
Immersion is an excellent way to learn a foreign language. If it is not possible to go to a Spanish-speaking country, then simulating immersion by choosing to speak only Spanish on certain days at certain times is a good method.
I have a Master's degree in Spanish and three current Illinois teaching certificates ( elementary, secondary and administrative) as well as endorsements in ESL/Bilingual. I have taught beginning, intermediate and upper levels of Spanish to over 3,000 students of all ages.
I began to learn Spanish in high school. The method at that time was to only learn by reading and writing. The result was that I could only read and write. I added to my skills by going to Spain for a year. I lived with a Spanish family and attended the University of Madrid. Many students wanted to practice their English with me, but I chose to speak Spanish, which is why today I am a fluent Spanish-English bilingual speaker.
I have spent three years working, learning and studying in Spanish speaking countries. As I traveled throughout South America I was intrigued by the different regional accents with which Spanish is spoken. Having heard the many different accents, I am able to teach Spanish to my students which will be intelligible wherever they go.
Students who study a foreign language do better on tests like the ACT!
On behalf of parents, at your request, I will contact the classroom teacher for students in K-12 or at the college level.
