About Lilly

I have over 25 years of experience teaching English as a Second Language both in the United States and overseas. I have enjoyed working in ACADEMIC intensive English programs, training international BUSINESS executives, as well as teaching SURVIVAL skills in adult education programs. I have tutored individuals and small groups of all ages who have a variety of goals. I have taught in China and Japan, and have experience helping students from countless other countries. I love learning about other cultures and languages.

I teach all skills that the learner needs to improve their communication skills in English. My areas of specialty include helping improve listening and speaking skills while focusing on pronunciation and "communication repair" strategies. I also help learners strengthen their foundation of English grammar and their ability to write effectively in English.

Once they begin lessons with me, my students are given access to English assistance every day. I encourage them to contact me during the week with English challenges that come up at work or in their daily life. I sometimes am able to respond immediately, but at least within a few hours. I also encourage those students who use English in their daily life to take notes of any communication challenges that come up so we can discuss them in our sessions and come up with strategies about how to respond better in the future. I enjoy helping students grow in confidence and skill as they communicate in English.

The hourly rate is determined by many factors, including how many total hours we meet per week, as well as the location, timing and amount of prep time needed. Please let me know if you have any questions. I'd love to design a program to help you reach your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching ESL for over 25 years and have an MA degree in TESOL.

I was a part of the teaching and administrative team at the Intensive English Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I have also taught academic English at the ELS Center in River Forest, Illinois and the ELI at the University of Delaware.

I have taught survival skills in adult education classes at the College of DuPage and am currently teaching newly arrived refugees with World Relief in Wheaton.

I have overseas experience teaching English in Japan and China. I have taught students from countless countries over the years and can help people of different language groups overcome the common challanges that they face.
