I am the mother of 2 teenage boys and have a patient, warm spirit. I have 5 years of teaching experience and seek positions where I can use my specialized knowledge and skills to implement individualized instruction for children and young adults. I have enjoyed teaching a diverse range of students in public, alternative and therapeutic settings, including those with learning and behavioral disabilities, cognitive and developmental disabilities, and students with language learning needs. I have used countless forms of assistive technology, including AAC devices.

I know that all children can learn and I have a passion for helping my students believe in their own abilities. I strive to build relationships based on respect and trust, emphasizing the positive and building on weaknesses. I maintain high but reasonable expectations, teach self-advocacy skills, and never give up on finding new ways to teach what may seem unteachable. Moreover, I always try my best to make learning fun!

I have experience teaching students with autism, on all levels of the spectrum. Aspergers is typically high functioning and students usually struggle most with social communication. I enjoy the unique abilities of students with Aspergers and am well aware of the behavioral challenges that may be present. Rather than just managing a maladaptive behavior, I believe in teaching positive replacement behaviors. Each student is special and has a unique way of learning and communicating. The biggest challenge is often motivating the student to express his or her knowledge and to learn new skills. Students often have strong preferences, which can be incorporated into instruction to achieve better engagement and participation.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Sincerely yours,

Suzanne
