About Marianne

I love speaking and teaching Spanish! I began to learn the Spanish language when I was fourteen years old, and I continued to formally study this language for five years--even during the early part of my undergraduate studies. Since then, I have continued to informally study Spanish, both through wonderful online resources and through personal relationships with Spanish-speaking individuals. These relationships have enabled me to maintain and to improve my use of the Spanish language.

I just finished my 21st year of private tutoring! I privately tutored my own children for 19 years as their home school teacher; and I am now into my sixth year of Spanish tutoring with WyzAnt. I have worked with over 70 students who have come to me through Wyzant! Eight of these students were part of a 12 month Spanish 1 course that I taught in a corporate setting. All of these students account for over 1,400 hours of Spanish tutoring through WyzAnt! Furthermore, I am certified as a substitute teacher in Illinois, and I spent the 2014-2015 school year as a Spanish substitute in the Naperville District 203 middle and high schools. I am currently a Spanish tutor in the Naperville 203 Homebound Tutoring program.

While working with WyzAnt students and while substitute teaching, I have become very familiar with the REALIDADES curriculum used in the Naperville Community Unit School District 203 schools and with the AVANCEMOS curriculum used in the Oswego Community Unit School District 308 high schools; in the Indian Prairie School District 204 high schools; and in many other school districts. I am also familiar with the EXPRéSATE curriculum used at York High School in Elmhurst and at Yorkville High School in Yorkville. I have also worked with Spanish students from private high schools such as Benet Academy in Naperville, Rosary High School in Aurora, Montini Catholic High School in Lombard, and Fenwick High School in Oak Park. Many of the above schools use the Blaine Ray Spanish novels; so I have a lot of experience with this series as well.

While most teachers at the high school level use a standard text book approach, some teachers at these schools use an immersion approach: the teacher will only speak to the students in Spanish. This can mean that the needed grammar foundation is lacking. I can provide that foundation.

I work not only with high school students but also with college students and adults. My most recent older students have been from College of DuPage, Loyola University, Chicago, and, as mentioned earlier, from a local business in which the company owner wanted both he and some of his employees to learn Spanish. In this latter setting, I functioned as a group teacher who created and taught the curriculum rather than as a private tutor who worked one-on-one with a student using his/her current class materials.

Because I LOVE helping students to learn to speak, read, and write Spanish, I want to make sure that I accept only those students that are serious about improving not only their class grade but also their ability to use Spanish. I have realized from the feedback that I have received from not only the many students that I have taught as a substitute Spanish teacher in the classroom but the over 80 Spanish students that I have worked with on a one-to-one basis that I am gifted in my ability to teach Spanish to students in a way that enables them--if they are willing to do their part--to greatly excel as Spanish students. I want to reserve my time for those students who are serious about getting help and about investing the time and effort necessary for this improvement to happen. As such, I will accept students with the understanding that there will be a four session trial period, and at the end that period, I will evaluate whether or not the tutoring relationship is a "good fit".

In the actual tutoring sessions, I will push each student to talk in Spanish as much as possible - even with the limited vocabulary of a 1st year student. Each student will have to spend a large portion of the tutoring session practicing his oral Spanish skills. I will often ask my students to "teach" me a concept in order to solidify his understanding of a concept and to reveal his true level of understanding. Furthermore, I will challenge him/her to become a true learner and to seek mastery rather than to simply learn enough to pass a test. I will also teach and demonstrate mnemonics (memory devices), whenever possible so that a student can learn more effective ways of learning and of preparing for tests. Finally, I will direct all students to some of the best, interactive, online resources available today to aid their Spanish studies

During the course of these tutoring sessions, I will communicate openly and regularly with each parent(when appropriate), about each tutoring session and about how his/her student is progressing. I will highlight each student's strengths and successes whenever possible, because it is often very difficult for parents to see beyond the weaknesses of a struggling student. I want to help parents to become their child's number one cheerleaders so that they can motivate their student through encouragement to move forward and reach his/her potential!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Because I am so detail-oriented and have a good grasp of grammar and writing skills, I am able to recognize errors in writing that others may miss. I have been this way since I was a young girl. As a matter of fact, I recently had a 42 year old woman tell me that years ago, when she was in grade school, I actually proofread one of her papers and helped her to receive a good grade. It made such an impact that she still remembers the event to this day! More recently, I proofread a 10+ page paper for a grad student who contacted me through WyzAnt. After editing her paper, the two of us met in person to go over her errors and to help her understand the grammar rules behind my corrections. I received a very favorable response from her.
