By this time of the school year, students who are struggling in Spanish class often begin to really fall behind in class. This is a great time to get some tutoring help while there is still plenty of time for your Spanish student to catch up and to work through current misunderstanding. And through the means of Wyzant's convenient online portal, Spanish tutoring was never easier!

About myself: I love speaking and teaching Spanish! I began to learn the Spanish language when I was fourteen years old at Naperville Central High School, and I continued to formally study this language for five years--even during the early part of my undergraduate studies. Since then I have continued to informally study Spanish--both through wonderful online resources and through personal relationships with Spanish-speaking individuals. These relationships have enabled me to maintain and to improve my use of the Spanish language.

About my teaching experience: I privately tutored my own children for 19 years as their home school teacher, and I a just completed my eighth year tutoring Spanish students through Wyzant. I have worked with 124 Wyzant students totaling over 1,900 hours of Spanish tutoring! Add to this the number of students from outside of the Wyzant referral network, and I have worked privately with over 150 Spanish students from middle schools, high schools, and colleges. Just this past August, one of my students was able to test out of Spanish 1 after I taught him all of level one Spanish and go right into Spanish 2 as a freshman at Naperville Central High School. I am also certified as a substitute teacher in Illinois, and I have been teaching as a Spanish substitute in the Naperville District 203 middle and high schools for five years.

About the schools my students have attended: while working with Wyzant students and while substitute teaching, I have worked with Spanish students from the following public schools and/or districts: Naperville CUSD 203, Wheaton Warrenville South High School; Oswego CUSD 308, Indian Prairie School District 204, and Downers Grove North High School. I have also worked with Spanish students from private high schools such as Benet Academy, Naperville; Rosary High School, Aurora; Montini Catholic High School, Lombard; and Fenwick High School, Oak Park. **Even if your student attends a school other than one of these, all Spanish curriculums follow the same basic scope and sequence.

About my approach: regardless of the curriculum used in the classroom, students often have a very weak understanding of Spanish grammar. There are often key concepts missing in a student's grammar foundation; so every time a Spanish teacher presents a new concept the student falls farther and farther behind. The student may experience more and more failure on quizzes, projects, and tests, and this can lead to more and more erosion of the student's confidence in his/her ability to succeed in Spanish class. This perpetual cycle of confusion, failure, and loss of confidence may lead to the student completely giving up and tuning out in class. It is at this point that many students have come to me, and I have been able to give them the confidence they needed to succeed. What is the source of this confidence? A strong grammar foundation. Specifically--when first meeting with a new Spanish student, I will go back to the very beginning of Spanish grammar: subject pronouns. Most students of all levels have incomplete understanding of these. This is so significant, because all Spanish grammar builds upon a clear understanding of subject pronouns(in Spanish, of course). From there I systematically take the student step-by-step through the most basic grammar in order to smoke out the learning gaps. I re-teach and review each grammar step until I arrive at the concept about which a student has absolutely no knowledge or understanding. Then we go to work on that concept. Each student will also have to spend a large portion of the tutoring session practicing his/her speaking and listening skills. I will often ask my students to "teach" me a concept in order to solidify his understanding of a concept and to reveal his true level of understanding. Furthermore I will challenge him/her to become a true learner and to seek mastery rather than to simply learn enough to pass a test. I help my students to understand WHY they have to do something and not just do something "just because". I will also teach and demonstrate mnemonics (memory devices), whenever possible so that a student can learn more effective ways of memorizing material at home and preparing for tests. Finally, I will direct all students to some of the best, interactive, online resources available today to aid their Spanish studies.

About the parents: during the course of these tutoring sessions, I will communicate openly and regularly with each parent(when appropriate), about each tutoring session and about how his/her student is progressing. I will highlight each student's strengths and successes whenever possible, because it is often very difficult for parents to see beyond the weaknesses of a struggling student. I want to help each parent to become his/her child's number one cheerleader so as to motivate his/her student through encouragement to move forward and reach his/her potential!

About the Wyzant online platform: this is like Skype with a shared whiteboard! The student and I can see each other, and we both get to work together on the same "board". We both can also upload documents to work on together. I love this platform! I have such productive sessions with my students, and recently, one of my students with whom I used to meet in person said that he thinks he is accomplishing more now that we are "meeting" online!

Great Spanish tutor

Marianne helped my son with some Spanish grammar that he was having trouble with. He went to the test feeling much more confident this time. She provided him with the resources to practice which was very helpful.

Knowledgeable tutor. Demonstrates professional teaching skills.

Marianne taught me parallelism, correct sentences construction, grammatical structure, word spelling, appropriate use of active and passive voice. She also taught me proofreading symbols. She is patient, ready to listen your concerns and address them. You want to listen to heard. I have no doubt that I can learn more from her.

So far my daughter has seen Marianne twice. My daughter said that in the two 90 min. Lessons she has had with her, she is understanding and remembering more than in the year she took in class betw. 7 and 8 grades.
