Study Skills

I recently received teacher training at a commercial tutoring center. They are experts at teaching study skills for the long-term; I have been applying these methods for the past few months, with dramatic results. These methods include: * Taking notes, and having students follow along, copying the full notes for themselves. * Frequently stopping to have students explain what they understand in their own words. * Breaking problems down into step-by-step plans - even students who struggle with the material can handle this. * Strategizing about how best to conquer long-term goals. * Training students in self-correction. These methods are nothing unusual, but on the part of the teacher, they require a great deal of self-discipline, and willingness to "push" the students.

I love calculus and am extremely competent teaching it. By now, I have built up a toolbox of creative ways to help students get past their barriers in understanding calculus. I've tutored many High Schoolers through their AP Calc AB or Calc BC courses. (Naperville North, Naperville Central, Hinsdale Central, etc.) I've also tutored students in all sorts of college calc courses - students who've needed it for engineering, the sciences, business, etc.
Geometry,

I'm very capable in this subject - proof-based geometry requires students to think like mathematicians or lawyers. I already have a mathematicians' intuitions, and I know so many ways to push students to greater understanding.

Great Calculus Resource!

Vikki worked with my daughter to help her prepare for a Calculus AB test. Vikki was prompt to the appointment, and got to work right away. She reviewed many topics with my daughter and had my daughter demonstrate her skills back to ensure that the material being covered was understood. Vikki is a great resource and we will not hesitate to call her again! Thanks, Vikki!

Great Pre calculus tutor

My daughter said Vicki was very helpful, kind and caring. Vicki wanted to make sure my daughter understood the problem, how she got the answer. She was very helpful, she'll be my daughter's tutor.

Tutor responded:

Thank you for these words, Tamara! "She'll be my daughter's tutor." - yay, music to my ears!

Appreciate her flexibility

My daughter scored a letter grade higher on her test after two sessions with Vicki. The first lesson was more of getting to know each other and reviewing math problems she already knew, but then the second lesson was right before the test, and she learned a few new things that were very helpful. Thank you. It was especially nice when she charged us only for the time they were together. They finished 5 minutes early, so the charge was adjusted.

Knowledgeable and Reliable

Vikki tutored my daughter in high school geometry, algebra, and advanced algebra. She is very knowledgeable and patient. She broke difficult concepts down into smaller steps, which my daughter found very helpful. She is also flexible in terms of meeting times and places. We highly recommend her!

Professional, patient.

Vikki responded quickly and met my son the same day for a precalculus tutoring session. My son has a specific learning style, and the first hour was not beneficial to him. He explained to Vikki his learning style and she thanked him for his input and changed her delivery, which was more suited to his mode of learning. The second hour was much better. He really appreciated her professionalism and started to understand the material much better.

Tutor responded:

I actually drove away from that session impressed with your son's negotiating ability & self-awareness. He spoke positively, told me what change he wanted, gave clear reasons, and then we got down to work. I can think of few people who would handle a tense negotiation (where they have that much at stake - he really wanted to do well on the trigonometry quiz) as effectively he did - props to him!

Terrific and superb!

Four words. Five out of Five. I'm a British university student having a vacation (but had to study as well, bummer!) and while we didn't spend much time that I have hoped for, she was brilliant in all lessons I had with her. Learned new things and cleared some things I had confusion with DFA and NFA. Oh and she is very nice and kind! Highly recommend this tutor to anyone doing Discrete Math.

Great tutor!

I needed to study for the ASVAB (military intelligence test), and I only had about a week to do it. I went from a score on the practice test issued by my recruiter of 35 (low) to 67 (very high) in three hour-long sessions with Vikki. She is an amazing tutor - easy to understand, and very patient. Thanks to her, I am going to be able to have any job I want in the Navy, instead of being limited by my poor math scores. Highly recommended! Thanks very much, Vikki! Update: I just took the ASVAB, and I got an 82 - one of the biggest jumps in scores my recruiter had ever seen. I was able to get the job I wanted that is only available to people who score highly - cannot recommend Vikki enough!

Fantastic tutor!

Vikki is doing a great job with my daughter. She is definitely starting to understand the material and it is showing in her work at school. I would certainly recommend her to anyone looking for someone who knows the material and is patient and skilled in tutoring!

Excellent Tutor

Vikki was very patient and my daughter found her a very clear and concise tutor. I wish we had found her sooner and we would recommend her highly.
