Besides working professionally in traditional print publishing, I specialize in academic tutoring for high school and college prep students, particularly those looking to expand their skills in English, reading, language arts, writing, and history. I have training in ACT, SAT, ISEE, HSPT, COOP, Terra Nova, ISAT, and EXPLORE Test strategy and method, and I used to work as a certified College Admissions Counselor (NACAC). If your student is looking to write a killer college application, I have read thousands and worked with many students to improve their chances of getting into their "dream school."
After working on the college side, I began working as a private tutor for grades K-12 in 2009. I have a BA in History and Creative Writing from a highly selective college in Illinois, one of the official "Colleges That Change Lives" (Loren Pope) and that designation is one that I use to drive my passion for helping students reach their full potential and find, impress, and ultimately attend the college that will change their lives. Having worked with group tutoring in the past, I believe that one-on-one tutoring is an unbeatable experience and that supplementing schoolwork with focused tutoring and engagement with a student's interests and abilities is the clearest path to academic (and life!) success.
Outside of my interest in tutoring and education, I am a published writer and cultural anthropologist. The impact of guided independent learning and attention to detail, especially in learning thematic concepts and synthesis in academic materials, utterly shaped my life, and it's a joy to see students' eyes light up in understanding when they make a breakthrough of their own. Hayley is amazing and worked great with my daughter. She is super responsive. After just a few sessions, my daughter brought her ACT score up 2 points, I can only imagine what it would be if we had given her more time. Thank you Hayley, we truly appreciate everything.
ACT tutoring with Hayley has been a huge confidence booster. Now the thought of taking the ACT doesn't seem scary.
The few lessons my daughter has had with Hayley has already improved her ACT score. We will continue with tutoring sessions to improve it even more!
Thanks, Hayley. Meghan appreciates the help with her AP English paper. She continues to improve in her writing and grammar
Hayley helped narrow down my ideas and introduced me to a great topic as a foundation for my blog writing.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I worked as a certified college counselor (through NACAC) for Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois for the 2009-2010 admissions cycle. Additionally, I have been a college application adviser for the last three years at a private tutoring firm.
I have tutored for both tests through a private tutoring firm in the last three years. All of my students have been accepted to their top-choice secondary schools, including parochial schools and high-ranking magnet schools.
