About Helen

I have a master's in Special Ed, specializing in working with students with learning challenges, emotional or behavioral disorders (adhd, depression, anxiety etc.). I believe everyone can learn and be motivated toward becoming life long learners. I individualize my material to fit the needs of each student. I have 14 years of experience with IEP and Advocacy for students in both the public, private and therapeutic teaching environments.

I most enjoy working with teens and young adults. I have tutored throughout my career but also worked in business settings so my style is with an eye towards real world application of knowledge and life skills. I am considered highly qualified in 7 areas by the state of IL and am certified for grades K-12 and ages 5-25.
I look forward to working with your student to help them gain skills, confidence, and an experience of success.

I can tutor basic skills, consumer math and algebra, and geometry.

I tutor reading for understanding, outlining and study skills.

I also have great strength in reading comprehension strategies and writing skills. I tutor organization of ideas, time management, and materials. Why struggle and battle without the right tools? Let's problem solve together.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

As a classroom instructor for 14 years plus 20 years of experience in the business world, I have real world experience in public speaking. I also took a number of communication and public speaking classes at University of Illinois during my bachelor's in economics. I have also taught public speaking as part of my language arts curriculum both in the therapuetic and public school settings. I cover in this curriculum organizational skills for presenting information, verbal and nonverbal skills for speaking and strategies for expressing one's self in a public speaking experience.

Social Studies

I have developed and taught curriculum for both US, world and ancient history classes. I was part of a district wide curriculum development program for US History over a 2 year period as well as developed social studies curriculum for 7-12th grade in the therapeutic teaching environment. I am also very familiar with basic sociology and geography materials.

Study Skills

I have a master's in special ed from Northeastern Illinois University in 2002. I graduated with concentration in working with students with learning disabilities, emotional and behavior disorders as will as mild cognitive impairment. I have worked in both a therapeutic and public school setting for the past 13 years in both cross cat classrooms, self contained, and resource settings.
