University of Miami (Biology)
I first experienced the joys of tutoring in college and have been interested in helping others learn ever since. As an undergraduate at the University of Miami, I tutored fellow students in subjects ranging from Genetics to Classic Greece and Rome 8 hours a week while maintaining a full student course load myself. I experienced first hand how overwhelming certain subjects can seem but confidently developed study habits and explanations tailored to each student to fit his or her learning style. I can happily report that students saw definite GPA improvement with weekly tutoring sessions!
Other teaching experience includes educating school and girl scout groups on conservation, running horseback riding lessons for kids aged 7-13, and being part of a dynamic salsa instructor team that taught classes for dancers of all ages in college.
As an honors student in high school and college, I know how important personalized learning and dialogue is to creating a positive learning experience. I always start by having a conversation with the tutee and establishing what the problem areas are and how to best tackle those learning challenges. From there, we can come up with a comprehensive plan including study tips and recommendations for homework. Most importantly, let's never leave a study session disheartened! We can talk out the problem and look at it from a new perspective if the current one isn't working.

Lindsay is doing an excellent job tutoring our daughter. We've already seen an improvement in her grade, but more importantly, she is gaining confidence in how to approach solving problems.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I minored in Greek and Roman Classics in college. My courses included Mythology, Latin 101, Roman History, Classical Literature and Culture, and Ancient Magic (as it pertained to cultural and religious customs). Given the well-rounded nature of the program, I feel qualified to tutor this subject.
Genetics was the subject I tutored the most in college, up to 10 hours a week before exams. From Punnett squares and gene expression to the DNA replication process, I feel very comfortable with this subject. I also recall learning genetic basics in high school during my AP Biology course so I know it's a relevant topic for local schools districts.
