About Allison

Aloha! I recently moved to Chicagoland from Hawaii, by way of southwest Colorado! I just graduated from Hawaii Pacific University with a Bachelors in computer science with a minor in mathematics, and I have tutored over 20 students individually, as well as worked in math labs. The bulk of my tutoring experience is with algebra and pre-calculus/trigonometry, but I am able to work with a variety math and computer classes. I am happy to provide references if desired. I so look forward to working with you to help you succeed in my favorite subjects. I believe in you! Aloha! I recently moved to Chicagoland from Hawaii, by way of southwest Colorado! Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

AFOQT

I took the AFOQT and received passing scores in all areas. Additionally, I scored in the 92nd percentile or better in 4 of the 5 areas.

Arabic

While in the military, I was sent to the Defense Language Institute, where I studied Modern Standard Arabic full-time for 1.5 years. I worked as a translator for the military for the next 5 years, attending annual language maintenance training. I maintained a 3/3 (Superior) on the Defense Language Proficiency Test. I also studied the Iraqi dialect of Arabic and maintained a 2+/2+ (Advanced Plus).

Computer Programming

I graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's in computer science from Hawaii Pacific University. Our coursework included methods classes on things like basic networking, app development, game development, software engineering, discrete math, and algorithms as well as studies in multiple languages. Additionally, I was hand-selected for a team to participate in the International Collegiate Programming Competition hosted by the Association of Computing Machinery. Our team placed first in the state of Hawaii.

Discrete Math

I have taken both a freshman level discrete math course through the computer science department as well as a junior level discrete math course through the mathematics department at our school. I received A's in both these courses.

Logic

As a math ed/comp sci major, I have taken an introductory math logic class, as well as two discrete math courses, a lower level one through the computer science department and an upper level course through the math department. I received A's in all three courses, and was at the top of the classes, helping some of my peers throughout each of the courses.

Microsoft Access

During my coursework for my CS degree, I took two Database classes, both of which were taught using Microsoft Access. I have since developed minor database applications with Microsoft Access for local small business.

Religion

I grew up as a preacher's kid, so religious studies was a regular part of our life. I then later attended a Christian university, where Bible studies was one of the three concentration areas of my first Bachelor's degree. Then I joined the military, where I was trained for a year and a half as an Arabic linguist. As a part of our curriculum, we also studied Islam. I am much less educated on other world religions, but Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are all areas where I would be comfortable helping someone.

Helpful and Knowledgeable

Allison was a very knowledgeable Java tutor and explained the material in a way that made it easier for me to understand. I was able to quickly set up a tutoring session with her. I felt confident in her skills and I am much more comfortable with Java.
