In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a former school counselor and now a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) who combines my fifteen years of experience in education and counseling to teach you techniques to enhance your skills. I have earned National Board Certification in both areas and keep current on best practices. I am also listed with the ISBE Special Education IEE registry as an Academic Performance Specialist. Over the last three years I have enjoyed helping dozens of students diagnosed with ADHD or related conditions. As such, my work includes tutoring students in ways to increase their executive functioning skills, study skills, social skills and level of academic achievement.
In my role as a certified school counselor I have worked with students diagnosed within the Autism Spectrum, including Aspergers. I have experience helping children with academic concerns and relationship issues, as well as the "Hidden Curriculum" of social skills training. I have had professional development training for helping students with learning disabilities, including Aspergers.
As a licensed school counselor and professional counselor I have taken coursework specifically for career counseling. I have also passed both state and (NCE) national exams certifying that I am qualified in the career development domain. For twelve years I was responsible for doing assessments and developing career plans for all 10th graders. I used many programs and sites including Career Cruising, Kuder, ONet, Holland and Myers-Briggs.
As the high school counselor the majority of my time in the Fall was spent assisting seniors in packaging themselves for college including: selecting and narrowing their choices, filling out the applications, writing essays, and searching for scholarships. Helping students plan for their future is my favorite part of counseling. I enjoy working now as an independent educational consultant so I can remain current on these aspects of college counseling.
I have spent over ten years helping students develop better study skills. Some of the strategies include time management, note-taking skills and knowing your learning style, e.g. auditory, visual. My 2nd masters degree was called School Improvement Leadership (SIL) which covered this area. I also taught a graduate level class to other teachers on Cultivating Student Achievement since sometimes the issue is not study skills and you need to know how to differentiate.
