I am an elementary teacher with expertise in math and reading for children in grades K-5. I have had extensive experience with students who have English as their second language, as well as, children who are slow learners or lack motivation. I believe in both the systematic approach of Phonics and the freedom and creativity of whole language. Depending on your child and his/her strengths, I will use the approach that will insure their success.
While teaching math, I will use a hands-on approach that will help your child see and understand math at its basic level. Math games and rote will also be used to create a well rounded math experience that will help my student to master the concepts being taught. Once this foundation is establish, mathematical success can be built.
Children learn in many different ways and therefore need a plethora of teaching methods that fit their style and learning abilities. My core belief is that given the proper instruction, patience and understanding every child can learn. My greatest reward is the smile on a child's face when he/she realizes that they "get it". In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Teaching math to students in the primary and intermediate grades requires extensive attention to visual perception of math functions. Developing a strong foundation of the basics of math, helps to ensure future success in this subject area. I use all methods available to me to lead the student to math success. Games, hands-on manipulatives, worksheets, and rote are some of the methods I may employ.
Phonics, the knowledge of letters and the sounds they make, is a subject taught in the primary grades. I have taught Phonics for 15 years. It is an essential tool for learning how to read fluently. Many letters have many sounds. I teach the sounds the alphabet makes and also the special circumstances when the sound is different. Along with whole language, phonics helps the student, new to reading, to become confident in his/her ability to decipher the written word. Along with this confidence comes the lifelong enjoyment that reading brings.
I have a K-9 Certification in Education. I have taught reading to children primarily in grades 1-3, but have had experience teaching reading to older children and adults. My strengths are in teaching children with short attention spans, lack of motivation or with English as their second language. I believe that with the proper phonics background, the proper educational tools, patience and caring the student will develop the fluency in their reading that enables them to comprehend better. Reading and being able to understand what is read is necessary for success. I will help your child attain that success.
I have found that spelling is a subject best taught in conjunction with phonics. Learning spelling rules, phonetic sounds, and the use of a wide variety of hands on applications helps the student to become proficient in the spelling of words. I use all these tactics not only to help students spell accurately, but also to make spelling fun.
Study Skills are essential for success in school and life. To develop good study skills, a student needs to know his or her learning style. I will help your child recognize his or her learning style and use that style to their advantage. Is your child a visual or auditory learner? This is important to know in order to be able to study better.
Time management, motivation, concentration and knowing when to ask for help are all necessary for the development of good study skills. Listening and note-taking are also important when in the classroom.
