In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have 15 years experience teaching students with ADHD. I use strategies such as putty to keep them focused as well as giving them sensory breaks. Strips of velcro under their desk help as a sensory strategy as well. Lessons can be broken down into smaller increments with breaks in between to get the student back on task. Most of my students are not on medication for their ADHD so strategies need to be incorporated to ensure learning occurs.
Aspergers typically has students working close to grade level but their social skills are greatly impacted. They are regimented so they typically like to learn the same way as they have been previously taught. Most students with aspergers are grade level readers but their comprehension skills are lacking so they benefit from word association. I put pecs pictures on word flashcards to give words meaning. My students with Aspergers are hooked up with a general ed buddy in and out of my classroom where we can practice social skills. They have a pecs system which I put in place to help them find the words they want to say. We give them scripted communication strips so that they conversation is not only about them and their interests. I teach them to ask about others even if they are not interested.
I am well versed in ABA, Pivitol Response Training, Pecs, Teacch and structured teaching.
I have taught students with dyslexia for the past 10 years. I work specifically with the Wilson Reading system for students with Dyslexia. It is a scientifically based program for struggling learners and it teaches you too see each letter individually. I have had great success. Last school year I doing homebound teaching for a general education student who has Dyslexia and I taught her Wilson and her anxiety about reading lessened.
I have been teaching 1-12 grade for 10 years. I have worked with both special education and struggling general education students. I am certified to teach reading, math, language arts, science and history through the Illinois State Board of Education. I am fluent in teaching everyday math and Wilson Reading, guided reading, storytown, and Edmark.
I have been teaching phonics for many years and have used many different models of instruction. I have experience with Wilson, Haggerty, Fontas and Pinnell, etc. I prefer a and on approach in which the students are involved physically as I believe and have seen that this helps them to remember what is being taught.
