About Sharon

I am a passionate, dedicated, and determined educator who is very much interested in tutoring your 5th grader in Math. I am also a licensed Illinois educator who is not only highly qualified to teach 5th grade, but has taught 5th grade for 12 years. During my 25 year teaching experience, I implemented and mastered numerous strategies appropriate for helping students reach their full potential when studying Math. Within the last 8 - 10 years, I tutored students in Reading, English/Writing, and Math after school and on Saturdays. Whether teaching in the classroom or tutoring, I developed a keen aptitude for teaching to all learning styles and personalities.

In my first lesson with your 5th grader I would like to administer a Math assessment so that I can determine your 5th grader’s needs and strengths. The results of this assessment would be shared with you and your 5th grader prior to our next meeting via email or telephone. Accompanying the assessment results, I will also present and explain a learning plan.

Does your student love computers? If so, you may find online tutoring to be the ideal opportunity. Your child will have access to regular scheduled sessions, as well as additional help if needed. Online tutoring will enable and/or encourage students to ask more questions. It also allows them to become better critical thinkers. Online tutoring has been found to be more convenient and flexible. Learning videos and other online learning programs will be shared with your child, thereby, providing him with an additional tool to utilize in the strengthening of skills. There is no additional fee for online tutoring. The only thing you would need is a computer and access to the internet. Accompanying my Bachelor and Master degrees in Education, I have also received certification to teach online. At your convenience, I invite you and your child to try an online lesson with me.

I would love to discuss the possibility of us working together for the benefit of your 5th grader. I am available Monday through Friday evenings, as well as Saturday and Sunday mornings. Please feel free to reply to this email with the days and times we can meet online.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with an area of concentration in Deaf and Hard of Hearing. While my certification allows me to teach grades K-9th, I am highly qualified to teach K-5. Although I have taught in the elementary school setting for 25 years, most of my experience has been educating 4th and 5th graders. I have also participated in various after school tutoring programs.

Elementary Math

I have taught in the elementary school system for 25 years. During this time I have taught kindergarten, fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. I am a lifelong learner and therefore, am not shy at learning new strategies to meet the needs of my students. Technology is incorporated into my lessons as a means of engaging the student. Depending on what your students interests are, he/she will be required to read literature, watch videos, make critical thinking/problem solving decisions, keep notes, and complete a project at the end of the unit.

Homeschool

I am a highly qualified, Illinois certified elementary education teacher. I have taught elementary school for 25 years and have tutored students before and after school for not less than 7 years. I am resourceful, seeking various methods to use with students so as to keep them engaged and motivated. Hence, I incorporate technology as an aid in delivering instruction, as well as providing an electronic means of interaction for students, which aid in my ability to be sure to teach to all learning styles.

Microsoft Publisher

I have used Microsoft Publisher to aid students in submitting project based tests. Students have completed brochures using Microsoft Publisher as a means of completing an English project which identified various nouns (common, proper, singular, plural, and possessive), capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and abbreviations. Students also created posters, calendars, cards, and timelines for various other units. I have taught in the elementary school setting for 25 years. Most of my experience has been educating 4th and 5th graders.

Spelling

I taught Spelling five times each weekday. I also provided test and feedback on weekly spelling tests. Spelling was also enforced in all writing assignments. To aid in the confusion of commonly misspelled words, all students were provided with a Commonly Misspelled Word List, as well as a "Write It Right" list. These two handouts were kept in a student Writing binder for easy referencing when needed.
