I am in my sixth year of teaching middle school science, but I also taught eighth grade math for one year. I am certified to teach kindergarten and up through middle school math, science, and social studies. I had to try a few different career paths before I became a teacher. At first, I wanted to be a doctor. Then, I wanted to be a lawyer. During graduate school, working as a teaching assistant in a class covering basic statistics, data analysis, and scientific research methods (numbers, numbers, and more numbers), I had the sudden realization that I wanted to teach. The advantage of this, though, is that I have at least basic knowledge in a range of subjects, and I'm often able to use one subject to explain another, so students can use their areas of strength to understand their areas of difficulty.

Interestingly, I was also diagnosed with very significant ADHD even after I started teaching. I enjoy working with kids who also struggle with this. I like helping these kids understand that having ADHD doesn't mean you're not intelligent. It just means your brain works a little bit differently than others. It actually gives us quite a few really cool qualities, like hyper-focus, which can be great...at times. Although it varies from person to person, one thing that IS true about ADHD is that it's tough for people, even teachers, to truly understand if they do not have it. It's not that they don't care, but they just don't experience things the same way. To be very clear, I am NOT an ADHD expert; I am still learning about it and dealing with it every day. I DO, however, understand how disheartening it can be and how it can make kids feel like an outsider in some ways. I can also offer suggestions for things that MIGHT help only because I know what has and has not worked for me. Those things, though, might not work for you, but sometimes they are worth a try. Like I said, ADHD is not the same for everyone.

I am able to review a student's work and determine what it is about the assignment that t
