About Brian

I've been teaching fifth grade students for 13 years. I've taught all major subjects, and enjoy each and every one. I specialize in math, specifically working on the underlying concepts in addition to the "how-to" skills. I have privately tutored a handful of students each summer, some in math, but others in English language arts and science. I've also been lucky enough to have tutored a few students learning to play the drums.

My favorite thing about teaching and tutoring is being someone who can connect with the learner while they learn something new. In that way, tutors can not only help improve the learner's understanding of the world around them, but can come to love the learning process itself. This is when all good teachers have succeeded.

Math is often a subject where conceptual understanding is pushed aside for simplistic learning of skills. While during remediation and under time constraints, this is okay, I truly strive to help students understand why math is the way it is. Not only does this help form an underlying theory that can be applied to future mathematical skills and concepts, it also shows students that their tutor is a person who believes he/she is smart enough to become mathematical thinkers- not just someone who can do math.

Whatever you're struggling with or want to become better in, I promise you that you are intelligent enough to master it. Everyone has a different style when learning. We just need to find yours, and then you can nail whatever subject you put your mind to.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I am currently working on writing the 5th grade common core math curriculum in my district. I have also aligned all my tests and instructional practices to the current standards. For my switch to teaching ELA next year, I have already started dissecting the English language arts standards, as well as the speaking and listening standards.

Drums

I have played drums for 25 years. I began playing the snare when I was in 5th grade and progressed to the set when I was in 8th grade. While in school band, I also took private lessons for 5 years. I have given private drum lessons to a number of students over the last 13 years since becoming an educator.

Elementary (K-6th)

I earned a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education in 2003 and have been teaching in the elementary setting for the last 13 years. During this time, I have privately tutored students in all subject areas during the summers. My philosophy is that every student can be excited about learning, but it takes a special connection for them to do so. I help to make this connection through helping each student find his/her learning style and connecting it with their personal interests.
