Greetings! I'm Lance; thank you for visiting my page. I studied philosophy at Benedictine University after taking a long break from schooling and learning to study on my own. My teaching style reflects my primary area of research. Brute memorization accomplishes little genuine understanding. Instead, my approach encourages pupils to think through, question, and process information. That sort of questioning, I believe, promotes knowledge of the subject. Facts are useless without systematization—it's only when they're processed that they produce something of real benefit to a student. By trying to answer certain questions about a field—by applying their reasoning abilities to the material at hand—students create understanding.
I have been teaching chess for almost seven years now. My experience has included coaching and directing after-school programs, instructing and managing summer-camps, and teaching one-on-one private lessons. Several teams I coached won state competitions; others were runners up. Two teams I worked with placed top ten in the nation; one student became the national champion for his grade level. I was vice president of Benedictine University's philosophy club and often aided students in improving their grades in a variety of philosophy classes. An undergraduate was having trouble in a logic course. She received a B+ on the final as a raw grade and an A after the curve. I also worked with two undergraduates who had B and C papers in a modern philosophy course and had been given the opportunity to re-write them. With some guidance, both students received A's on their papers. I worked as a proofreader for a student taking a writing-intensive business ethics course. She ended up receiving perfect marks on her writing and an A in the class.
It is my goal to help students succeed in their current subjects of study and improve their capabilities as learners. The abilities to read and listen well, to process information logically, and to ask the right questions are key to academic success. Instructors notice these sorts of qualities in their students.
If you have questions or are interested in setting up a trial meeting, I encourage you to contact me. I respond quickly to all messages.
Professional and friendly.
I am a much better student of Logic because Lance was a great teacher. In addition to being intelligent and professional, Lance is friendly and kind. He is patient with me as I take my time formulating answers and typing. When I mess up an answer, he is understanding. He helps me see my mistake. I enjoy my learning with Lance and our conversations around Logic and Life.Colleen , 10 lessons with Lance
Great First Class
Had alot of fun losing to Lance lol, definitely showed me some stuff in just the first hour. Excited for my second class.Tony, 2 lessons with LanceTutor responded:
Some of your chess skills are definitely above the 1000 ELO level you currently hold. In learning about your weak-points and developing conscientious chess habits, your rating will improve and, sooner or later, you'll get the better of me in a game.
Essay writing improvements
We have just started working with Lance to help my son (a freshman in HS) improve his essay writing skills. We appreciate the depth of knowledge Lance is bringing to the meetings and his questions to help our son work through how to write better essays in short time periods. We recommend Lance’s skills.Christie, 29 lessons with Lance
Great teacher, very knowledgeable
Lance has helped my son expand his knowledge and understanding of philosophy. He was very patient with going over each topic, in order for my son to retain and verbally reiterate the lessons learned.Christina, 12 lessons with Lance
Knowledgeable and great tutor
We were very nervous initially because the subject was extremely difficult. Lance talked with us and calmed us down he listened to me about the urgency and probably understood. Sasha felt very comfortable with him and I would recommend Lance to everyone he has the knowledge of the subject but, he is very understanding and teaches in a calm manner with great pride. Thank you for helping my daughter, Lance.Monika, 2 lessons with LanceTutor responded:
Thank you very much! Sasha is very bright and made quick progress on the parts of the subject with which she originally struggled. I suspect she will continue to improve and will achieve very high marks in the course.
