My primary areas of study are philosophy and the psychology of human learning. My teaching style reflects my interests; brute memorization accomplishes little genuine understanding. Instead, my approach encourages pupils to think through, question, and process information. That sort of questioning promotes understand of the subject. Facts are useless without systematization. It’s only when facts are processed that they produce something of real benefit to a student. By trying to answer fundamental questions within a field - by applying their reasoning abilities to the material at hand - students create understanding.
I have been teaching chess for almost a decade. My experience has included coaching and directing after-school programs, instructing and managing summer-camps, and teaching one-on-one private lessons. Several teams I coached won state competitions; others were runners up. Two teams I worked with placed top ten in the nation; one student became the national champion for his grade level. I was vice president of Benedictine University’s philosophy club. As vice president, I often helped students to better understand their assigned readings, to study for exams, and to polish their papers.
It is my goal to help students succeed in their current subjects of study and improve their capabilities as learners. The abilities to read and listen well, to process information logically, and to ask the right questions are key to academic success. Instructors notice these sorts of qualities in their students.
If you have questions or are interested in setting up a trial meeting, I encourage you to contact me. I respond quickly to all messages.

Very patient tutor
Lance has been vital in my understanding of Logic and has taken his time to make sure I understand fully what we go over during our tutoring sessions. He is very patient and kind and is not judgmental in the least when I ask him to repeat the same concept over and over until I finally understand. I’m very grateful to Lance I very much so recommend him to anyone searching for a patient tutor. He also makes himself very flexible and available which is a huge bonus. Definitely give Lance a chance to tutor you, you will not regret it!Dulce, 3 lessons with Lance

5/5, my new go to tutor! MUST BOOK!
Look no further - Lance is your guy. Lance was a pleasure to work with. For starters he took me on a short notice, something many tutors were not willing to do. With Lance it was no problem. He asked my schedule to ensure that it worked with his and sure enough it did, within hours we were able to get started and work together. Being someone that thinks that she can do it all, I was a bit scared to book a tutoring session. Although I was not sure of what to expect, I for certain can state that working with Lance exceeded my expectations. Philosophy for one is not an easy subject despite what many people believe. Especially when it comes to reconstructing an argument. The text that I was assigned to read itself was pretty daunting. To ensure he understood the assignment in its entirety Lance read the text prior to us meeting and re-read it two times during our session. Although I could not digest what the text said on my own, having Lance explain it to me and dissect in a way that would make the everyday human understand it made it click for me. Moreover, seeing his effort and devotion to ensure that I understand made me confident in booking another session before the first session ended. You rarely find people like this. Through the usage of everyday examples paired with humor from Lance I am now sure that I will not forget what Mackie was arguing when he was discussing the essence of no objective values. Side note: It was funny enough the assignment I was tasked with mentioned the essence intuition and my intuition from the jump told me to book with Lance. Super glad that I followed my intuition and made as he's now my tutor for all philosophy needs!Arianny, 3 lessons with Lance

The best chess teacher
Lance is an experienced teacher. My son had no experience with chess before, now he improves his chess play week by week with Lance’s teaching. Lance is also a fun teacher. He knows how to interact with kids. His class is never boring, he teaches my son different tactics, he practices puzzles with my son, also he goes into live online matches with my son to practice his skills. The most I appreciate is that Lance asks a lot of questions to make my son to think, he doesn’t give him direct answers, instead he asks my son questions like, do you move your bishop or do you take out the pawn. If my son makes a mistake, he will provide hints to help him figure out solutions on his own. Thanks a lot Lance. We really enjoy your lessons!Jen, 14 lessons with Lance
Knowledgeable and Flexible
Lance is a great tutor! He helped walk me through writing a college-level philosophy paper. I learned so much from our sessions. Not only was Lance knowledgable, but also he challenged me and inspired me to think more deeply about legal philosophy concepts by posing thought-provoking questions as we wrote. Lance adapts to his students needs, is available, committed, and flexible. I also really appreciated how patient he was with me as this was my first philosophy paper of this nature. I look forward to working with him in the future and highly recommend his services.Layla, 10 lessons with Lance

Great teacher, very effective!
We hired Lance to help our middle schooler, who has ADHD, with all of his school subjects. Lance is extremely patient with him and our son seems to look forward to their meetings. Further, we’ve already seen a real improvement in our son’s grades (across all subjects) since we started just a few weeks ago. Our son was averaging around 65% in some of his classes and since he’s been working with Lance he’s closer to an A minus percentage. Lance has a way of teaching that emphasizes learning and how to think over memorization which, I think, helps our son get excited about his education. Couldn’t be happier with our choice!Cynthia , 138 lessons with Lance
Good with my 8 year old
Lance got my 8 year old talking chess right away. They played three games and my son asked for more time with Lance right afterwards! Good mix of play and coaching, and nice way of breaking down chess questions into easy to understand pieces.Terra, 14 lessons with Lance
